Networking with windows me

So we have this one computer at work that we cant replace with a newer one. We are running certain software that requires a older pc. i have no idea why. But any time you install it on a newer pc the software dont work. Even if you have older OS installed. It just dont work.

So about a week ago the computer died. It was running windows 98se. So i asked around and got a nother old computer. It has windows me on it. So i install the software on it and it works so we have been using that computer. Now with the win98se computer i had it networked in and i would send the files to that computer threw the network. it was nice. But some reason i cant get this dam windows me computer to network right.

So my question is this. Is there something special in windows me? this is the first time i have ever used windows me. The lights are flashing on the nic. But some reason it cant find any other computers and i cant find it. Im lost. Any suggestions let me know. What ever other info you need let me know.

Pardon me... but that's hysterical.

There's a LOT "special" in Windows ME. It was probably the single buggiest product Microsoft ever released. A total disaster.

Will XP run on this machine? If so, I recommend upgrading--networking actually works, for one thing, and there are tons of other ME problems that you'll avoid.

yes it will run, or more of walk/crawl but it can be done. the biggest concern is why cant you get the software to run properly? what was the software writen for 95, 3.1, dos? have you tried xp's compatibility mode yet, it can usualy get old software to run.

I think you need an IT department.

I called the manufacture of the software. And asked him about the software. He told me they spent 2 weeks tring to get it to run on a new computer. Could never do it. They suggested getting a older computer. Its a Dos program.

How does the software work and why is it so special? Could it be run in a virtual machine running under windows XP?

i do not know. the company that made it said they couldnt find anything above a penii computer that would run it. they said faster processors would not run it. its software to program a cnc machine. to upgrade the software to windows stuff it would cost alot. so at this point this is not a option.
