Too hot in the hot tub!

MythBox won't boot!

We had a storm the other night and even though my Mythbox is on a surge protector, for some reason it won't come on. When you hit the power button, the fans start running, the hard drives spin up and then everything shuts down. The power is still on to the motherboard because it won't do anything until you either shut off the power supply and leave it off for a few seconds or hold down the power button until it powers down.

I have replaced the power supply and the memory and nothing has changed. I'm at a loss from here. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Pixel

sounds like a fried motherboard or chip to me. How old is that surge protector? what's its surge rating? Not all surge protectors are alike, and if they're more than 5 years old they probably don't protect anymore.

I was afraid of that. The surge protector is a few years old. Probably time to get a new one. I have a dupe machine at work I can swap the chip out with. Hope that's it, I don't really relish the idea of swapping the motherboards.

Thanks shakran

no problem. FYI for future reference any time a surge protector gets hit by a powerful surge like the one you had, you DEFINITELY need to replace it. The MOV ( the part that shuts surges to ground) in a surge protector gets degraded as it shunts power. A big surge will pretty much kill it.
