Temporary Internet Files, History, Cookies, etc.
I have a little question. I clear my History and Temporary Internet Files everyday, but when I fill in certain forms, the auto-complete brings up old stuff I typed. Where is this info stored? Can I delete it somehow?
I know I can turn off the auto-complete feature, but I would much rather actually get that info off my computer. Thanks for any help. |
most of the stuff is stored in the registry, and you have to look thru it to find it.
or u can use 3rd party programs to do this for u. |
maybe get one of those programs like window washer?

This site has some rather detailed instructions on what you seek. Using the clear history/cache buttons in IE doesn't do anything. In fact, you can't even clear it from inside windows; you have to use the ol' DOS prompt. But you can read all about that from the link. Let me know if you need any more info.

History
I have experienced that many times. The auto-complete history just won't go away right?
If that is the case, it may be that you have a corrupted history file. Go to PurgeIE.com and download PurgeIE. Follow the instructions, and hopefully, you can get rid of all of them. It's a handy software to have installed, because I found that this sort of things always happen with Microsoft's softwares. |
does that purge program clear index files?

Files
What index files are you referring to? I know that the program can clear the index.dat files.

Man, I used to have the best program ever for this, and I can't remember what I did with it or what it was called. :(:(:(

Woohoo! Found it! :D
It's called AutoWhat and it's right here: http://www.projectbigbrother.com/progs/autowhat.zip You're downloading from my personal web space, so only do it once, please. If you don't get this within a week, then you'll miss out because I'm not going to leave it up. Enjoy. |

"Using the clear history/cache buttons in IE doesn't do anything. In fact, you can't even clear it from inside windows"
um, yes you can. using the find files and folders function, you set the folder to be searched as c:\windows\temporary internet files\content ie and then put *.* in the search field. windows will then show you every file in those folders. in fact, there is a good chance that you will get an error message saying the search has exceeded the max limit of 10,000 files. ignore that and delete all the subfolders within content ie folder (they will have randomly generated names lik fgy675fgt, etc). windows will respond by warning you that you are about to delete important system files but you can ignore that warning. windows will just recreate them. and voila, done without having to use dos. as for the history, you can just navigate to the history folder and manually delete anything in there. |
you can get there, but you can't (at least on my old 98se machine) delete the index.dat files. You will get some sort of access denied error. Or I could be a moron. I haven't bothered to try it outside of dos in a while.
