windows will not start...

XP Pro

it starts up and said i was missing a system file or something, i forgot what it said, i'll have to check... i put in the recovery disc, hit the R button to do the recovery thing... it asked me which install to repair, i hit "1", and it sat there for 20 mins, nothing happened after i hit it..... the processor wasn't running either...

i'm assuming it coulda got messed up from getting shut-off while starting up from a small hardware issue. which will be investigated after this...

what should i do? i'm not really fimiliar with repairing windows itself, soo any help will be appricated.... and i REALLY would like some stuff off that hard drive.

Well the stuff on the hard drive is most likely safe. As for the processor not running, I’m not sure what you mean. You can damage the operating system by killing the power while it boots and while it shuts off, it’s rare, but very possible. As for a fix, do you have a second hard drive, or another computer? If you do, throw this hard drive in it and copy off all the important files off. Then replace the drive, format and reinstall. If you don’t have a second computer. You could try to install windows to a second directory on the hard drive, BE SURE NOT TO FORMAT IT, but use it as a last resort.

When you get time, find out what file it says is corrupted.

Some other things it could be, the hard drive could be going, the hard drive controller could be going bad, it could be bad memory, or something else small. Either way, the file is corrupt and needs to be fixed, why it became corrupt also needs to be determined.

i don't have enough hard drive space on it to install windows on a second directory

as for the hard drive not moving, it works... but when i select the harddrive to repair using that startup disc, it doesnt' do anything, and i said that to indicate the computer wasn't doing anything when i selected the drive.

as for another computer. i'll have to find someone else with a external drive case that will fit that that hard drive. though i really would like to get this done on my own..

You could always install a second copy of Windows XP into a totally separate directory on your hard drive. It will then load this new copy of Windows up when the computer starts.

If you do this remember that the two copies of Windows know nothing about each other, which means you effectively have to reinstall everything. Even though your files and programs are installed, the Windows regstries are not connected. It will get messy after this, but at least your computer would boot.

a Live cd,
Knoppix, http://www.knoppix.org/ is a fan favorite, it will boot your computer up and provide you with tons of applications like cd burning.

I pretty sure it will automount your drives/partitions but if it doesn't just find a friend with some linux knowledge.

Worth a shot and only costs a blank cd ( or temporay residence on a cdrw)
