Can't end process - iTunes
 

Ok, so iTunes is fucking up again, and I ctrl-alt-del into processes, and see it's running. So I hit "end process" and NOTHING... It doesn't end. Just sits there, mocking me.

Why would the process not end? When I try to load iTunes, it gives me the "busy" cursor for ~2 seconds then goes back to regular pointer.

That is pretty messed up. IMHO windoze has always done a junky job of ending processes.

The only advice I can give you ATM is rather barbaric and common sense - just reinstall :) Someone who actually uses iTunes may be able to provide far more insight, so I urge you to wait for a little more advice.

Are you ending the Application or the Process?

Many frustrations with the "End Application" window of Task Manager prompted me to stop using it -- if you End Application, Windows actually asks the program whether it can force shut-down. If you end the Process (in these case it'll be "iTunes.exe") it'll shut down immediately.

And I believe the "busy" cursor is just a simple initalization delay.. when you open iTunes it searches for an iPod, airTunes connected speakers, the Music Store, and a few other things. Try going into the iTunes options and disabling everything you don't use if you want to speed up load time.

you can also set it to replace task manager so it comes up instead on ctrl+alt+del

Did you get itunes from your CD that came with your ipod or did you download it from apple's website?

some times, if it does not say 'access is denied' it is because windows is preparing a crash/error report to send out, which also crashed, either give it time, or add tunes to the list of programs not to prepare reports for.

to do this, open the system properties window, select the advanced tab, then the error reporting button, select the chose programs button, and add itunes to the do not report list. Hope that is the problem.

Windows does have problems with trying to end processes, but it has more to do with the programming of the process than the ending of it.... If a process is not coded right, it'll hang until sundown. Windows, as a controller, can only do so much. If a process is hanging threads like streamers on holiday, you'll never get out.

Oh, and by the way, OSX 10.4.6 is experiencing major problems. See, Windows is normal after all!

Okay, so head out and get the latest iTunes and install over the old one. You should be good to go.

From a layman, for what it's worth:

iTunes is often connected to other programs. for example MSN messenger, with the what's playing option. it won't shut down if other applications are still associated with it in that way.
