Google Chat is getting Integrated with Gmail

Basically gmail users are going to be able to chat through their webmail. I can't decide if I like this option or I think it's unnecesary.

Quote:
Some Gmail subscribers would begin to see the changes instantly as the service was rolled out on 7 February, the company said.

They include a Quick Contacts list that displays the contact the user communicates with most often.

The new service offers messaging services within a dedicated portion of the Gmail browser window.

Conversations can also be archived, although this feature can be turned off.

All subscribers would be able to use Gmail Chat within two to three weeks, the company said.

I'm just glad they made a delete button; it was like please archive your 15 daily topic reply notifications. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if they're still storing what you delete like every company with your credit card info in secret.txt, but at least I don't waste all that time pulling down the menu.

I think what's more interesting is that Google Talk chat logs can be stored and searchable in GMail. If Google proves to be trustworthy, this will kick ass. If not...it could be very scary. Worse yet, maybe Google is trustworthy but simply won't be able to win against the government when it REALLY wants information.

I trust Google. I think what they're doing is really going to revolutionize the way we communicate and handle information. It's just that we've gotten so used to our old habits that we resist and even fear change. For example, some people are afraid to try online banking because they don't think it is as "safe," and some people still request paper tickets for flying "just in case."

I've played with it a bit, and while it's very cool, it's completely useless. I mean, how much time do you spend in the gmail window? Why not just use the actual google chat program?

It is cool that it archives the chats; I like that a lot... But I just don't see the point of it. It seems more like some programmer showing off his chops than anything.

this will be fucking useful for when you can't install or dont have time to install the program. like for example, if i'm at school, i don't have administrator rights to install the software. but a web chat like webmessenger.msn.com is pretty cool.

I agree that it's very convenient to have a web based chat when you are on a public computer and don't have permission to install software. I also think it's really cool that the conversations are archived and searchable. Imagine if this had been around when you first started using the internet. It's kind of like a constantly growing time capsule that you'll be able to look back on in the years to come.
