Large Files Sent Through Internet

Let me put the usual prologue in that I searched this forum and couldnt' find a similar topic.

My question is simply, how can you send large (~1 gigabyte) files through the internet. gmail has a limit of 10 megabytes, and no free web-servers I've found have a large enough capacity. I've considered using a filesplitter but don't want to go through that hassle if i don't have to especially considering I have many files of this size I want to send. thanks for any input.
peace

1) Encrypt it
2) Create bit torrent named "Olsen twins go lezbo"
3) Upload torrent to thepiratebay.net or mininova.org
4) Profit

Setting up an FTP server would be an option, so long as your ISP will let you.

Etarip 02-03-2006 09:34 PM

Yep, setting up a (HTTP,FTP,SSH) server if you can is a good option. You _might_ be able to do it with some instant messenger client, I've swapped a few files that way.

There is nothing wrong with YouSendIt.com, for up to 1gb. So if the files you are trying to send are any bigger (and it sounds like they are), then it will not be the thing for you :(

if you have to split it, winrar or hjsplit work well. put all your files in one folder and let 'er rip.

YSI gives you a working link for a week or 25 downloads
filefactory is supposed to host huge files for emailing, but i don't know how well it works these days

the drawback of these hosting sites is it takes a while to upload.

um... are 2 cd's and a few stamps out of the questions?

meanSpleen 02-04-2006 12:40 AM

Stamps!? They just raised postage to 39 cents! Besides, you can buy 4 or more recordable cd's with that much money.

Something else you can try is make a torrent out of it, and just set up a tracker somewhere for the bittorrent download. Possible over DHT so it can be trackerless, but I have no idea how to go about setting that up. If you have to coordinate with people you can probably still get it out.

You could use a filesharing program called DC++, but it's more of a third party sort of deal, and the files would be available to all (though if unknown unlikely to be shared)

Yes DC++ is very good!
log onto a hub,
or set up one of your own
you can even password protect the hub so it's private

Depending on how soon after you upload it that you would want to download it again. You could use the binary news servers. Split it up using WinRAR or WinACE. And upload it to a binary news server such as alt.cd.images for starters. Although you might need to check on the turnaround for news postings. Also, do keep in mind that anyone could download your file.

This puts me in mind of the good old days... leaving Telix up overnight to grab a file (via dial-up) from a friend...

Your best bet would probably be an ftp server, or to create a spanned archive for use via gmail or whatever other method you have for sending smaller files.

i use trillian aim for big files all the time just need to hope your connection is stable enough not to go down half way through. if it is it works just fine.

ratbastid 02-04-2006 05:55 AM

This is what bittorrent is for.

Fob_Magi 02-04-2006 08:01 AM

Yes bittorrent, I believe azeurus will let you make a trackerless torrent....

First off, I really appreciate the quality of these comments that came through in such a short period of time. This is my first posting in the computer forum and no other forum comes close in terms of being closely read and quickly responded to. I had never heard of yousendit.com but that is what I'll be using as I only have a few files over 1gig, and I can break those into 2 large chunks which won't be a problem. I'm transferring them between states, and I'm the only one at either house with the computer literacy to do this transfer, otherwise I would have used AIM or some other IM programming to send it.

Thank you guys for all the responses.

I gotta tell you, this is what bittorent was invented for.

Download Azureus

Install it.

Click "File"
"New Torrent"
"Next"
"Browse" to the file you want to send.
"Next"
"Finish"

Click teh torrent you've made. Copy the tracker link (which is your IP and port) that's listed, and paste it to your buddy/whatever via IM or an email. Bang, they click teh link, see your tracker, start downloading.

It's really not much more complex than that.

Of course, the reciever would need to have a torrent client too. And you said not major computer skillz on the other end. But maybe you can use this elsewhere.

Decent how to guide.
