Yet another hardware reccomendation thread. Today:Printers

Going to pick all your minds again today, this time about printers. I am just about to buy a canon powershot s50 (5.0 megapixels), and it's about time that I invest in a color printer anyway. I am looking for something that will give me prints that look like they are from film, but can also print regular color documents like my CD covers and school papers. Canon would be the prefered make as the camera supports direct printing, but it's not that important (I mean I have a computer anyway!). Anyone love their printer. Price is not the biggest factor, but if a cheaper printer has the same quality as a more expensive one I am not one who likes to pay the extra price. Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations....

well lots of printers can get close to film. Epson stylus photo is one, but it's slow and mine broke pretty quick. My Lexmark Z53 is a FAST printer (I'm not kidding. It's REALLY fast) and it prints very nicely. You'll have to get the special photo paper no matter what inkjet you buy.

If you want the highest quality, dye sublimation is the way to go, but that's EXPENSIVE. Color laser is also pretty pricey but the printing is excellent.

I'd stay away from Epson, HP, and canon printers as their reliability has been called into question.

I have an Epson for pictures, and an HP for everything else. The Epson works great for printing the pics from my Olympus, and the HP duplexes which is great for work stuff or anything larger than one page.

Both printers have special papers as mentioned in the post above. I left out the model numbers so you could decide what works for you.

I have no problems as far as print quality, and speed. I wish I could get both qualities from one printer, but, alas, if it is made I can't afford it. As far as customer service is concerned, Epson is horrible, or the real term is, shitty. HP is just fine. They have drivers and faqs online. Epson has excuses, and limited support and don't care.

I use the HP off a printer server and sometimes I need to remind it of it's features (duplexing), other than that it is a nice machine.

The Epson is usb and tempermental as hell. It's software compliment of Adobe Photosoft Elements, and other stuff from a grab bag of hangers on is quirky. When it works it, produces terrific pictures from its many cartridges. The print quality of the Epson is hard to beat. It just is a pain in the ass to get it work consistently.

I should mention I am using a Canon scanner that is like the Epson. When it works, it is great. I bought it because of the resolution, slide/negative capability, and usb2.

To copy negatives to the drive requires tedious framing, lens adjustments, and some time. Then you get to play with the software and adjustments for the Epson to bring your prints to life.

When I bought these units, they were the way to go.

Look at all the things I mentioned in this long post, and decide what you can afford. Sometimes a higher price doesn't mean better quality. I have seen very nice results from Microtek. They might be a sleeper, but check their stats. My next scanner might be a Microtek.

I probably would connect that to a newer, smarter Epson printer (your original question).

For text (duplexing) and regular pictures, HP. For very nice pictures, Epson.

Keep in mind, all my experience is with jet printers. I have no photo laser printer knowledge, except that I can't afford one.

Check <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,110660,00.asp">this link</a> for reviews of color jet printers, and <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,109371,00.aspthis one"> for color laser</a> printers.

Excuse the long reply to your question. I just have a thing about getting quality prints, and documents from my kajillion dollar home computers.

edit: there are two links in there. Put your cursor on "this link", it goes somewhere, really. My html stinks.

Thanks everyone, especially to Poof. I don't mind a wordy answer, especially if I wanted a reccomendation. With so many options I love to hear about everyone's experiences especially people who seem interested in getting the best quality. Thanks again!
