Access forbidden?

I've been getting this a lot today:

Access forbidden!

You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
Error 403

Apache/2
If I hit reload, there's no problem. I don't think that anything has changed in my system overnight.
(Firefox / WinXP SP1)

There's a new script running on the server to prevent denial of service attacks. How many simultaneous connections to the server is your browser allowing? The settings still need to be tweaked.

If you wait 10 seconds then retry, it'll let you back in.

I have mostly the default Firefox settings, which are:
max connections: 24
max connections per server: 8
max persistent connections per proxy: 4
max persistent connections per server: 2

However, I also have manually set the following, based on the recommendations in the thread Firefox Tuning - MozillaZine Forums:
network.http.pipelining: true
network.http.proxy.pipelining: true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests: 8

Since I'm using a tabbed browser, I typically open 10-12 tabs at a time, and the last couple of tabs trip over into the Access Forbidden page.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else.

heh.. how else do you expect a (now) well-protected server to reach when you hit it 12 times instantly?

I've got an idea.. instead of us adjusting settings on our end, how about you doing a little to help save resources by not taxing the server like that?

Well, I didn't know. And it didn't cause me any problems before here (or on any of the other bboards I read), so I didn't think about it.

So, are any of my settings that I listed above "bad", or is it just my "load a lot, then read it" technique?

Halx 08-11-2004 11:01 AM

heh.. umm.. I dunno.. just don't open so many pages at once. I think that'll help us both out. This is a new thing for us and it's used to protect the server. 12 tabs DOES seem a little excessive, doesn't it? I own the damn site and I usually only have 1 or 2 open.

Charlatan 08-11-2004 12:21 PM

I've been getting these warnings today and only had one page open at the time...

Halx 08-11-2004 08:25 PM

can you give details? What pages wereyou flipping through at the time? What browser? OS? Connection?

I use firefox and I like to go through a forum and open all the links I am interested in in new tabs (middle click) so I quite often have 2-3 or more pages trying to load at the same time, and I also have the 403 error issue. I dont like the new setting but it's nice to know the cause :P

Destrox 08-25-2004 05:58 PM

This might have somthing to do with the recent way the board has been acting to me. I would click a link, and it would just sit there for like 10 seconds and then load it all at once with normal speed.

This happens on anything I click on within this place, and doesnt do this anywhere else.

Is this delay thing somthing similar?

(Mozilla Firefox or IE both do it. Both have default settings for however they are installed.)

Not to contradict, but I don't think that downloading the 12 pages in a short time period instead of opening them one at a time makes any difference to the amount of server resources used. Also, the only computer bearing any extra load from having 12 tabs open at the same time is the computer running the web browser.

People have different browsing habits. Me? 3 or 4 tabs.

Thread unstuck. There doesn't seem to be a problem anymore.
