Avatars, Whats the limit? NSFW | NSFW

Hey guys, lately I have been trying to change my avatar to a .gif because this appears to be the recent fad/trend, but for some reason the machine scales it and rids it of it's animated properties.

Also, can we not use avatars that are "revealing". I'm saying avatars that include even covered body parts. I'm OK with this ....

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3467/...b3040f.jpg?v=0 ... or even my avatar ...

But as far as 'showy' is concerned ... even that is too NSFW.

I'm not trying to say you're all heathens and are going to go to hell, all I'm saying is I simply have to check who's posted in a thread before read it at work.

Psycho Dad 07-09-2009 02:53 PM

Somewhere in your user CP there is a setting to hide or show avatars. Turn them off at work if you want. And you can say I'm a heathen and going to hell. I don't give a shit.

Xerxys 07-09-2009 02:56 PM

Hey, whaddaya know, you can disable avatars ... thanks Psycho Dad, and yes, you are a heathen, and you are going to hell. :)

Disregard.

Jozrael 07-09-2009 03:00 PM

Your avatar, while changed, isn't animated.

Fix!

Xerxys 07-09-2009 03:02 PM

The new one isn't meant to be animated though.

I've had enough people tell me that. And I've had a fair share suggest it too.

Jetée 07-09-2009 03:04 PM

Limit for animated avatars is 20kb last I remember, but I don't think it's above 25kb if I'm wrong.

Also to note, dimensions scale back to max of 100x100 pixels.

Xerxys 07-09-2009 03:23 PM

^^ Rather hard to fit a gif in these parameters ...

Quote:

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 39.1 KB (whichever is smaller).

DaniGirl 07-09-2009 03:43 PM

I agree with Xerxys, I don't think we should have NSFW avatars. Even if there is a way to block them while you at work. Sorry Halx, I think your avatar is too NSFW.

Halx 07-09-2009 03:46 PM

Dont I know it. I have a hard time browsing my own site from work. hahah.

Glory's Sun 07-09-2009 04:17 PM

We have the option to diable them for a reason. It gives everyone an option of what they want.

And if nsfw is a concern at all then you shouldn't even be on tfp while working ;)

Xerxys 07-09-2009 04:33 PM

^^ lol, it wasn't a concern until recently. For a long while I was unable to get onto this website while PonyPotato was merlinau and she had the avatar of a girl on her belly sunning herself. That wasn't even "showy" enough but I would rather not stir heads. Halx isn't the only one, I simply don't get on threads where I see Scorps has posted while I'm at work.

Granted theses two folk don't post as often most especially in threads I frequent but I'm kinda glad we can disable the avatars after this.

Language is one thing because no one can read from afar but even small avatars give me an involuntary twitch to Alt+F4!!

Jozrael 07-10-2009 12:48 PM

The premise of the thread still hasn't been answered? What's the -limit- of an avatar. Like, can it be hardcore? Etc.

Punk.of.Ages 07-10-2009 12:52 PM

I don't think there is a limit...

I've seen some pretty hardcore shit on avatars before.
********************************************

This is an adult website for a reason. Gucci said it best; if you're worried about it, don't get on at work...

Jozrael 07-10-2009 12:56 PM

I am satisfied :).

The_Jazz 07-10-2009 12:57 PM

No kids.
No scat or bestiality.

Pretty much the same that goes for pictures anywhere here. Every once in a while, we'll get someone that has a picture of a kid in theirs and we have to ask them to take it down or do it ourselves if it's blatant and in a thread that requires immediate attention (like the "Introduce Yourself Here" thread). And there are at least 2 hardcore avatars I've seen recently, although I'm pretty sure were from posters in the TB.

If the NSFW avatars are a problem for you, do what I do and toggle them off at work and on at home. Doesn't take long to do and makes life a little easier. You can also turn off signatures if you'd like.

Xerxys 07-10-2009 02:17 PM

For future reference, "If you don't like it, don't listen/watch/read/eat it" ... isn't an answer ...

Why, because, I do like to read the reports/posts/replies here. I do like to read what everyone has to say. So really, "dont ____ it" is akin to "you got a problem? Fuck off".

Second question, how to gif an avatar ... :surprised:

No, it's 'You got a problem? Turn them off'...totally different. Why should we censor a portion of the board you can choose not to view?

Here's some samples of avatars currently had by members:

http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/customa...tar52054_3.gif http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/customa...tar36307_6.gif http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/customa...atar1735_3.gif http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/customa...tar21273_1.gif
Does that help you understand the boundaries, which was the original question per the topic of your thread?

Xerxys 07-10-2009 02:46 PM

^^ Twisted, the solution provided by PsychoDad, I welcomed whole heartedly.

It's the folk who concluded that if it's even a concern that I shouldn't bother with the site at all that I was addresing.

which is more important.. your job or surfing tfp at work?

don't want to get in trouble.. don't view TFP or turn off the avatars. end of story.

The_Jazz 07-10-2009 05:10 PM

Finally, here's our chance to get rid of you Xerxys. My plans have finally come together! Buahahahaha!

Xerxys 07-10-2009 05:56 PM

^^ You oppressive fucks want to prevent me from making my avatar a gif!! Damn you!!

Wyodiver33 07-27-2009 08:25 PM

Personally, I hate Halx's avatar. Not because it offends me, but because every time I see it I end up kind of mesmerized by it. Lol.

Punk.of.Ages 07-27-2009 08:26 PM

How come nobody answers the gif avatar question?

Halx has administrative immunity to the restrictions, so he can have whatever size and dimensions (this not so sure) that he wants.

From what I recall about avatars, when I set mine up over two years ago, I think I read somewhere that you can have a "lascivious" or "explicit" avatar only if you post within the EZ subsections. If this isn't true, please feel free to correct me.

Glory's Sun 07-28-2009 05:25 AM

if you want an animated avatar, you'll need to hyperlink it instead of uploading it..

at least I think that's how it works. I've never been able to upload an animated .gif to the server and have it work.

Halx 07-28-2009 05:30 AM

You can't upload a large gif and have it work when it is resized. The gif loses its animation if it is resized by the board software.

PonyPotato 07-28-2009 05:42 AM

So that means Xerxys has to resize his gif before he tries to upload it.

Simple enough.

Vigilante 08-01-2009 10:35 PM

FYI if you want to block avatars at work, you don't have to toggle anything.

In firefox, go to tools / options / content tab / load images automatically (leave checked) and click exceptions. Put an exception for http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/customavatars/* and all custom avatars loaded to the site will be blocked.

You can also do the exact same by loading the above link with a wildcard (*) at the end in adblock or adblock plus.

In either case the computer with the block will define if you see avatars or not, and when you get home you can see all the NSFW content without having to change anything, and without worry while at work.

cdwonderful 08-02-2009 04:39 PM

all I can say is thank God there is no limit to how often you can change it.............

That is incredibly helpful information. I had never thought to check if avatars came from a special URL. Thanks!

dlish 08-02-2009 07:44 PM

thanks vigilante, thats great info...what about if you take your work laptop home or travel with it like i do?

xeryxs - coincidentally this topic came up about a week ago between the mods...the unanamous decision was the same feedback you're getting here. the avatars wont get censored unless of course they infringe board rules. turn off the avatars if you dont like them.

Xerxys 08-02-2009 09:19 PM

Dude, this thread was started in July.

The mods are really screwing you with info and the entire "loop" thing you have going!!

Thanks. I just tried it, the FF Options end up blocking everything from the buttons to the avatars. Too big of stick.

Works well in Adblock tho :)

Ah I got it. Use different browsers, or toggle firefox profiles.

Shoot. FF must not work inside directories only. That's ok, we knew and you confirmed that adblock worked out :)
