TFP would be better implemented as a newsgroup...
When you think about it, TFP is really a usenet newsgroup. If it were implemented as such and we all accessed it using NNTP clients then Halx's bandwidth usage would go down dramatically! It would save Halx a lot of money and we'd still be doing the same shit we are now!
I got the idea when I thought about why TFP used up so much bandwidth. It's due, largely, to the fact that so much redundant information is being passed back and forth. For instance, when I'm reading a thread I'm necessarily transferring all the posts that came before the one I'm looking at. If another post is made, I then reload all the previous posts before the only one I'm actually interested in - the new one! Also, while I'm composing a new post, every time I preview it, I'm not only reloading what I wrote but a bunch of other posts as well (ever noticed the posts listed under your composition as context?). Usenet has none of these problems. Additionally, if Halx were ambitious, he could do a combination. For instance, you can't re-edit usenet posts so he could implement that using the web interface. Also, the Titty Board would use less bandwidth the way it is (as a web interface) if people won't tolerate links intead of inlined images... What do you all think? |

Another advantage to a newsgroup is proper threading. You can have a tree view of the different conversations that have branched from your thread. It would be much better than what often happens now, where someone will haphazardly answer someone's question many posts above...

It's a website for a reason. End of discussion.
