Banned members thread

Ok, I realize this is an unpopular subject. No one likes to have to ban another member, but occasionally it must be done. For those of us who are not Mods or Admins, it would be nice to hear a brief description of why someone was banned. For me it would be a way of seeing what is absolutely unacceptable here and it would help with closure if I had grown fond of seeing someone's postings. Perhaps it could be posted under Tilted News?

Ganguro 10-21-2003 03:19 PM

that's kind of embarassing though, isnt it?
plus.. that's like private info and stuff :)

Don't take my word as gospel though, i'll let an admin spell it out for you when they see this thread.

spectre 10-21-2003 03:44 PM

When someone is banned, they fucked up, really badly. All you need to know not to get banned is to read the notices, but it's all really common sense. Things such as not harrassing members, flaming, etc. We don't immediately ban people because they did something we didn't like, first, they are warned. We like to give people enough slack so they can get used to the forum since we will inform a person if they are doing something that isn't appreciated. If they don't heed the warning and continue, then they are banned.

BentNotTwisted 10-22-2003 04:03 AM

So, just heed the warnings given. If someone doesn't, they will have to live with the consequences.

Peetster 10-22-2003 05:04 AM

You don't need to know why some people are in a max security prison. You trust the system to protect society from people that screw up very badly. Similarly, you don't need the details of why a member was banned. Just trust that they were warned first, and given painstakingly detailed reasons why a particular behavior would not be tolerated.

Unlike my analogy, though, folks are seldom banned for one offense. They need to show a consistent trend of bad decisions to earn banning. Once that happens, we try to move on.

Redlemon 10-22-2003 09:58 AM

I've gotta say, I feel a bit of schadenfreude when I see the "Banned" title under a name as I'm reading a thread, and I kind of find it fun to search through that person's posts to find out where they screwed up.

SecretMethod70 10-22-2003 02:59 PM

There are VERY VERY few things that can get you banned on first offense. In fact, the only one I can think of offhand is posting things like goatse. cx

redlemon: don't forget that sometimes (most times) the reason they were banned was removed. ;)

I've spent whole days doing that on other forums.

Word of the day: schadenfreude! LOL The perfect word for this situation. Thx redlemon.

I know, but sometimes I get there quickly enough... :D

"A malicious satisfaction in the misfortunes of others." Schadenfreude comes from the German, from Schaden, damage + Freude, joy.

aye! i feel/do the same

sometimes i'm able to figure out likely why it happened...

...and hm, is tru that we *really* don't need to know, most of the ones banned were 'insignificant' (if i dare say that...)

but occasionally when i see a more 'established' member banned (or Loser :p ) ... i do get a bit curious.

ah well. ;)

This was my primary aim for the thread, although I didn't make it very clear. If someone comes into the forum and, after a dozen or so posts, can't follow the rules then it doesn't matter if we ever hear from them again. There are those exceptions where a member has become an involved part of the community and has hundreds of posts and then is suddenly banned. It almost seems as if none of the Admins/Mods want to talk about banning, like it's some kind of bastard child that no one ever mentions. I say they should be proud of banning members who break the rules. It shows us they are doing a great job of keeping this one of the best forums on the 'net.

In the paper, there is the police blotter, and ask any lawyer/doctor, the first thing they do when their monthly magazine arrives is turn to the back and look at the disciplinary actions taken. I think it would be a good idea, and urge the mods to reconsider.

As an example, see the Locked Posts Forum on the MozillaZine BBS.

Yeah. I do feel sympathy for those "established members" who suddenly receive the Banned or Loser status. But I (thankfully) have yet see one. Except on one occasion where I did see a "established" member was given the Loser status.
Oldtimer's scripts... - (It is possible) Read the first one. ;)

This isn't one of the best forums on the Internet, this IS the best forum on the Internet. I've never seen another forum that's as intellectual and asshat-free as this one. Go Halx and all others that helped make this site what it is.

it's been said once, but we'll say it again. there is alot that happens behind the scenes here at the tfp. we do our best to keep nonsense like that <b>behind</b> the scenes so it dosen't affect the tfp as a whole. we are not going to parade our losers around for the general amusement of the public, nor are we going to show off everything we've removed simply to say "don't do this."

we have rules. we enforce those rules. you don't need a laundry list of whos and whys to figure out where the line is, simply follow the rules. we aren't going to air our dirty laundry for a few yuks. end of story.

Finally an explanation I can agree with. I too am curious a lot of times, but it probably would be best to leave well enough alone. Thank you phredgreen for giving us a valid explanation other than "We said so, so there"

SiN 10-29-2003 09:38 AM

yep, good reply phred. thanks.

:)

dy156 10-30-2003 11:33 AM

Fair enough.
It was just a suggestion.

It's really not that interesting guys trust us.

Mods can ban, admins can ban or loser. In general, if someone has a Loser tag, they really fucked up.

0nesh0tw0nder 11-14-2003 02:53 PM

Yea.... Great thread to finally post on eh? k.... here goes.... you guys do a wonderful job keeping fucktards off the boards... yea that's about it.... good job! keep it up

wolf 01-28-2005 06:40 AM

I don't think I've ever seen anyone with a loser tag.

K-Wise 01-29-2005 10:02 PM

^ I have..when people revive OOOOLD dead posts. When people do that you see banned and loser tags all over the place. Had no idea what the loser tag meant. Didn't know it was the lowest of the low. Interesting.

Asta!!

I have a question, once someone is banned, is there any way to atone for one's sins and become unbanned?

tecoyah 02-04-2005 04:34 PM

With a temporary ban....yes...you are removed from society for a designated period. The hope is for a member to gain understanding and enlightenment while left in the cold, cold darkness that is non-TFPism. A permanent Ban is just that............Permanent. Although there is an old legend of one who communicated directly with the One true power in TFP land, and was redeemed. As with all legends....no one truly knows the real story.

*tecoyah ques spooky music*

SecretMethod70 02-04-2005 05:02 PM

If someone is banned for being underage, he or she may - after turning 18 - contact Halx to show him that he or she is 18 and he will unban the person.

Hardknock 02-06-2005 03:59 PM

Curious, how do you know if someone is 18 or not? All the kids say they're 18. Online anyway.

tecoyah 02-06-2005 05:11 PM

There are ways.............nuff said

Hardknock 02-06-2005 05:35 PM

ok..........

No, they don't. A lot just tink that the rules don't apply to them. If they try to hide it, we can find out a lot of the time.

Undercover_Man 02-22-2005 05:38 PM

How is someone supposed to better themselves if they don't know what s/he has done wrong? Now most do know what they've done wrong but I was banned from another forum and I wasn't even given a warning or nothin. I think he might have been a guy that I kikd his ass on a HL mod. Can't remember which one tho. Maybe TFC. But I really liked that forum even tho it wasn't a big community. And it looked like the emails posted on their main site blocked all banned members. This was a mean corrupt mod just cause I kiked his ass in a game.

My point is, ppl should be given a reason why s/he was banned cause it's just polite. But only if s/he asks. I'm not sure if this mod WAS the person that got his ass kiked by me but I would have liked to have known just what it was that I did. I STILL can't figure out what I did wrong. But then I found TFP and I'm SURE that TFP wouldn't do that to one of its own members. It's just unpolite and unprofessional. If you're gonna kik someone outta your house do you not give a reason??

Just my $0.02

tecoyah 02-22-2005 07:50 PM

It is extremely rare for a member here to become Banned without warning (spammers are not members), those who meet this fate generally know, through warnings, PM's, and general communication that the Ice is thinning well before they are removed.
We use warnings as a tool to make this place what it is, and mold it into what it can be....take them seriously, and you will never be banned.

Undercover_Man 03-14-2005 01:17 AM

Hey. I have a question. I thought I'd post it here instead of making a new thread. Anyways, what's the difference between the "Loser" and the "Banned" ppl?? Is one a perm ban and another a Temp ban or are they they same thing or what? Just curious I guess.

- Undercover_Man

tecoyah 03-14-2005 05:39 AM

Banned simply means they were removed from TFP for breaking the Rules.
Loser means they really pissed someone off in the process.
