minimum number of post befor you can start a thread

I'd like to see there be a minimum number of post that a new member needs to reach before they can start there own thread. this will accomplish two things, first, it will stop those bastard spam bots that make one post for cheep [rolexes|v!@gr@|Pr0z@c|...], and secondly, it will stop overzealous users who join and post crap again and again and again without reading the rules.

I would place this number of post at 5 to 10, not many, but enough to get people used to the format of the board, no one line post, no direct links to other pages, etc.

seems every new post by a new person has as comment number 1 on it a comment from a senior member here telling them how to post. So in that sense, this makes a great deal of sense.

I agree with about 5 posts being a good minimum

Or even better, some kind of thing that would make you have to be a member for X amount of time plus so many posts in order to make your own threads.

totaly agree! i'm sick of seeing the 1 line posts with no discussion or anything in them. "i like chocolate" <--does not make a real post!!

#of comments before they can start a thread is great.

# of time might just make them wait and then post after certain time.

# of post before someone sends a PM would be great. I recently got contacted for a demonoid invite from a user that never posted once on this forum so ofcouse i didnt give him one. i suggested he try joining THIS forum before demanding anything from it. and well, i still see no posts from this user.

i say we do it! :>

I completely agree. I think 5 posts is a reasonable start, and maybe a 24 hour limit, from signing up for an account, before you can start your own thread.

On this note, would it be possible that any new threads started (other than in the newbie section), be dumped into a cue to be reviewed by a mod? If the post equals what could be posted, then it gets the green light. Otherwise, the mod tells the poster what they need to do?

What do y'all think of that?? If it's even possible.

I think the idea of this is to take load off the mods. They do yeoman's work anyway. If there were fewer newbie-crap threads posted, it'd save them a lot of thread-locking.

MAYBE the exception to this should be in Tilted Newbies, where we encourage them to introduce themselves...

no, the idea behind my suggestion was to alleviate the load on the admins, not add to it.

thanks for all the positive feedback.

I've got something that should work for this purpose. We'll test it out. My only worry is it will force spammers to hide their ads in actual threads, which is harder to track down. Well, not to mention that a 5-post minimum might be worse than repremanding a new user.

I'm in agreement that a minimum number of posts be set before thread starting. Also, is it possible to require a search for newbies before starting a thread? Say, 25-50 post minimum before that's not required?

i to do fear that the spam will hide it self, however, one spam in the sea that is a thread is not a problem, whereas clogging the forum with spam is. the minimum also has to be ignored for the Tilted Newbies forum.

I'd love to have the search function, unfortunately, you can only lead a horse to water, how do we actually force the user to read through the search results. maybe a friendly reminder just before they post on their first 10 to 20 posts?
