MLB Gettin' Greedy Again...
ST. LOUIS — A company that runs sports fantasy leagues is asking a federal court to decide whether major leaguers’ batting averages and home run counts are historical facts that can be used freely or property that can be sold.
In a lawsuit that could affect the pastime of an estimated 16 million people, CBC Distribution and Marketing wants the judge to stop Major League Baseball from requiring a license to use the statistics. The company claims baseball statistics become historical facts as soon as the game is over, so it shouldn’t have to pay for the right to use them. linkage "all accounts of this game belong to {your team here}, Major League Baseball and this station." and did i mention i hate the RIAA??? |

I personally believe they are historical facts AFTER the season is over, but during the season they are property of MLB and are needed revenue for some of the smaller market teams. It's like SymDynasty, or a few other baseball sites where you deal with fictional players instead of the real thing. (In SymDynasty, you can change the names to whatever or whomever you want.) I don't think Yahoo is going to start charging for their game (unless you buy the "add ons" or go premium). They make far more in the advertising and selling your addy to spammers. If they were to charge, then fewer players would play and they would probably end up losing money. It'll be interesting though to see how this all turns out.

My response is, "I like to put forks in an eletrical socket, just LOVE that feeling, can't ever get enough of it, so will you let me put this copper fork in that electric socket?" |
