Changes to David Cup (and UK get whipped)
Federer said that he thought Davis Cup should be every two years - and then it would mean more and all the big players would play. I agree with him, definitely. You want to see the big players representing their country.
As for UK, we had a pretty hard game (Switzerland - with the great Federer) - so basically you have to win all 3 games Federer isnt playing in (oh, and he's in the doubles) - unfortunately we won 1 set in the whole tie! Clay is always gonna be difficult for Rusedski, and Murray has come on a long way, but people have to remember that he is 18 and at least a year from being a fully developed player. I thought Murray did ok. I think our prospects are ok going forwards, but Greg is a veteran player, and we dont have that many great players coming through. As for the games... I only saw the doubles (Federer won his first singles 6-0, 6-0, 6-2)... we took a set, but the Swiss were always too good, and there was one of those Federer moments: He was scrambling, running full speed backwards to recover a lob, and then he just kind of twists round, half falling over, and slashs a backhand that fizzs into a gap about a foot wide to hit an outright winner - the whole while facing the wrong way. Its wonderful to watch, but as an opponent you must just be thinking "how did he do that? what can I do?" Anyway, the main point of this post - if the Davis Cup went every two years, maybe with a concentrated final something like a world cup format with maybe the final 8 teams or something over 2 weeks... do you think it could really catch on and be a huge global sporting event???
