The answer about how a team tied for the division lead with another team could be called the winner was interesting to me, too. I saw the explanation this weekend somewhere, and it went like this: If two teams are tied for the division title but BOTH are going to the play-offs anyway, the one that won the season series between the teams is considered the division winner and the other is wild card.

I couldn't figure out Thursday how the White Sox were being called the division winners when the Indians would tie them if they swept the series. But then I figured it out--if the Red Sox/Yankees series had been a sweep for the Sox at the same time, then Cleveland would have been ahead of the Yankees for the WC. If the Yankees swept the Sox, the Indians would again be ahead in the WC. Only if all three wound up with the same record would there be a play-off--first for the division title and then for the wild card.

It's confusing, I'm not sure I explained it well, but I do understand it. Mostly.

When the W/C and the DIvision Champ have the same record, instead of a playoff they go by the head-head record.... Hence, Chisux got the Division call when they did.
