US Open Tennis
The big story so far is of course Andy Roddick getting unceremoniously bounced in the first round.
Personally, I've never like the guy or his game, so it was a delight to see that match. I've always felt he was vastly over-rated. He's basically just a big server with a strong forehand and not much else. I don't think he'll win another major as long as Federer is still playing. My picks to win are Federer (of course) and Clijsters. |

Sorta agree re: Roddick - he gets a lot of airtime because he is really the only US star out there on the men's side of things, after so many years of Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe and Connors being such dominant forces in the game.

Roddick is a magnificent player in my mind... but every tournemount is just for Federer to lose right now.
I think Serena could do well, but I think ANY tennis fan, even the most patriotic American, would love to see Kimmy win a slam. Another good slam for Andy Murray too... two good perfornances against top class players.

Roddick is a great player. And he's a nice guy I hear. He knows on any given day he can be beaten by a lesser player. Par for the course.
I thought Venice would beat Serena simply because Serena is not in good physical condition. Too much fun time I guess. I hope to see James Blake play Federrer.

Ah my old fav. Andre Aggasi. I havn't followed tennis much lately but decided to pay attention to the U.S open. I like Blake a lot, but growing up I loved Agassi and was pulling for him last night. It was a great match with a great outcome.
As for the the womens side I have to go with everyones favorite Sharapova, basically because she's hot. However I don't really care that much as long as the Williams sisters don't win it, I despise the Williams sisters.

The match between agassi and blake was amazing, its incredible the difference to me between that match and the quality down the stretch to the quality in the genepri coria match when he double faulted to lose the match

As for the men... lets be honest, its still Federer vs everyone else.... and Federer has to have a bad game for any ordinary human being to get close to him.

well done Andre...
but lets be realistic... he is winning epic 5 setters against top 100 players like Blake and Ginepri. Federer is a different league to anyone who has played in Andre's generation... even the great Sampras cant do what Federer does. Nalbandian was made to look like a boy in the quarters... and Lleyton is just getting wiuped out (second set tie break....) its like Federer in 4th gear if the best player in the world, but when you get close to him, he (most times) finds fifth gear and plays in a way that only exists in the imagination

yay for Kimmy!
2.2 million dollar prize money too, not bad for a couple weeks work. But I dont think there could be a more popular winner, she is probably the one of nicest people in professional sport. What a beatiful smile

Mary Pierce must have been nervous. She just was off. But I knew Kim would win. Did you see the look in her eyes and her seriousness. She's like a Bjorn Bjorg "stoneface".
I think I'd rather have seen Blake or Roddick play Federer. Anyhow Federer is really awesome. Onward to the Davis Cup!

I thought Agassi did pretty well... if he could have served out the 3rd set to get to 2-1... who knows. But Federer just has another level to any other player. The performance in the 4th set was just irresistable.
