What is a magic number in baseball stats?!

Ok so ever since the longest time this has bugged the heck out of me. On this page of MLB standings there is a stat named "Magic #." Does anyone have any clue what that means? I tried searching for an FAQ and never could find anything!

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/standings Thanks for the help! :)

From about.com:

http://baseball.about.com/od/glossar...gic_Number.htm

“Magic Number”

Definition: A magic number is a number used to indicate how close a front-running team is to "clinching" a season title. It represents the total of additional wins by the front-running team or additional losses by the rival team after which it is mathematically impossible for the rival team to capture the title in the remaining games

Yup, he hit the spot, but fox is pretty stupid for showing a magic number at this time, IMO.
