He likes to talk smack, but dosn't always back it up.... waaaay back in 1993,he was calling an NFL quarterback named Jim Everret "chris" as in Chris Everet the female tennis player.. after a few times, everett had enough and dared him call him Chris a gain... Rome did, and the much larger and stronger Everett pushes Rome out of his chair and grabbed his shirt before being restrained. Some say it was an orchestrated event, but I remember Rome's eyes looking scared when it went down.

I remember seeing that video...it was fantastic. Jerk. They should have let Everett have at him.
I tried watching his show on Fox Sports and the one he had (still has?) on ESPN shortly after that. It was all crap. If he's not pandering to the lowest common denominator by ripping into folks, he's kissing a phenomenal amount of ass.

I can't stand "sports radio". Most of the commentators are too stuck in their own agenda to be worth listening to. (Bob Costas, Stuart Scott, and Dan Patrick are the most prominent exceptions to this.) The only time I have the radio on the local sports radio stations is if there is an actually sporting event on it.
BTW Chris Everett would kick Jim Rome's sorry ass, I'd pay for PPV to see that. |

I can't stand to watch too many sports commentary shows anyway. It's a bunch of supposed experts yelling at each other under the mistaken assumption that the louder they are the more right they have to be. The only show worth watching and only occasionally is Pardon The Interruption. Occasionally.
Except Dan Patrick. I've always been a fan of Dan Patrick although I don't get the opportunity to listen to his show as much as I would like. For everyone's viewing pleasure....The Rome/Everett tussle... Link because I'm too stupid to embed video...

I listen to a lot of ESPN Radio and almost every show has a overly pretentious host. The absolute WORST host Todd Wright, which sucks because I have to leave for work at 5AM and he's all I have to listen to if I want Sports Talk on the radio. I liked Mike & Mike but like I said, I can't listen to them anymore now that my working hours changed. We lost Tony Kornheiser who I DID like, and got Jim Rome instead. We don't get the third hour here, they go to Dan Patrick. He's tolerable. The local guy, Tony Mercurio, makes my ears bleed and I switch away from him the moment he comes on. Plus Rome is a West Coast guy, and being from New York, I have to dislike him. -Mikey |

i LOVED tony kornheiser...i've got all his books, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! as for mike and mike, i can't stand them. golic goes on for minutes, repeating himself. he stutteres way too much, like he doesn't know what he should say next. they have too many bits and off sports topics that the talk about. needless to say, i don't listen to them. |

Just for what it's worth:
One morning as I was getting ready (and running late) I actually saw the tv version of Mike and Mike, and was quite surprised at it. When they're not talking, I watched as both Mikes were going through page after page, busy highlighting sections, looking all serious when it was not their turn to talk, and I thought, Damn, it really is a job, and they actually work at it. |

I used to listen to sports radio quite a bit, and some Rome on occasion, but I generally listened to the local shows in Phoenix.
It used to drive me nuts when the hosts would talk about the movie they went to the night before, or playing golf with their buddies, or whatever that wasn't sports related. I wanted to hear about the local teams, not the stupid hosts. I didn't want to live vicariously through the guy at the radio station. I really liked Bob Kemp and Arnie Spannier way back when on the One on One sports network out of Chicago. i think they got bought out though by ESPN or sporting news or something. That was YEARS ago.

Jim Rome is great, he's entertaining. Take what he says with a grain of salt. His perceived arrogance is all part of the show. I see it more as being positive than being arrogant. However, I don't think he's cut out for TV or at least hasn't found the right format.

I think the reason Jim Rome is popular because people will either really agree with his opinions or really hate him for them. Hes just on there to create some controvesry.
Personally... I really hate him, never watched his TV show, haven't listened to him on the radio in about 5-6 years. |

We have an ESPN affiliate in our area, but they take off the last two hours of Mike and Mike to play a local sports show. That'd be OK if (1) we didn't already have a local sports show on at the same time, (2) if the local sports world had something to talk about this summer other than a junior in high school and where he'll go to college next year (I kid you not, this goes on EVERY day for minutes at a time) and (3) if the local show was any good.
It's three strikes and it's out--I want my Mike and Mike back. And back to the point of this thread: No, I do not listen to Jim Rome. I'm sometimes in the car when he's on, and it's a hard call between him and Cowherd on ESPN; I usually go to music or Rush Limbaugh.
