Pedro Pedro......

Ok, listening to ESPN Radio All Night Show has led me to pose this question on the board.

Background: Pedro helps Bosox win it all then bad mouths the fans and front office during contract negotiations during the offseason. He leaves for the NY Mets.

Earlier this week he says he doesn't want his World series ring..... then recants and says if the Sox send it to him he'll take it, if not then no big deal.

My question: You run a world championship team, your best player (arguably) leaves the team and bad mouths everyone and everything..... then says he doesn't want the ring but later says if you send it he'll take it.... What do you do?

Me, personally, I would offer it to him. He did deserve it. I would thank him for the years he played and for the help he gave, and then I would never speak of the man again.

Of course they will give it to him; they really have no choice.

Pedro just realizes how horrible of a team and organization the red sux are.

They willingly jeopardized the health of their players to win the ws. it was the only way they could win.
No respect for the organization at all.
now they are paying the ultimate price of having a broken down bunch of players.

Pedro will get his ring

jorgelito 04-13-2005 02:43 AM

It's really two separate issues.

He should get his ring.

Who knows what's really going on in that organization (benefit of the doubt here).

Bad-mouthing the fans is pretty low-class and unprofessional, then throwing a mini tantrum not wanting his ring is totally silly but then again, at least he's being a bit honest eh?

So, ring? Of course he should have it (he almost lost it anyways during the series but got baile out).

As far as character? Hard to judge, but based on public image, good riddance you big baby.

The Red Sox pride themselves on being a "team", but look how viciously they turned on Nomar and Pedro, conrnerstones of the Red Sox for the last several years.

canuckguy 04-13-2005 05:27 AM

I think he should get the ring, but i don't remember him bad mouthing the fans? I know about his dislike for boston management but don't remember reading about him lipping the fans.
Pedro is an awesome pitcher, but a big baby when it comes to personality........wish he was on my team though.

kutulu 04-13-2005 08:51 AM

Of course he deserves the ring. However, it doesn't change the fact that Pete is a whiney bitch. They were rightfully concerned about giving him that extra year so Pete flys off the handle.

Other than Schilling, who else was playing injured? It was all Curt's choice and he had the chance to be a hero. I'm sure he'd do it again.

Glory's Sun 04-13-2005 10:33 AM

How did the organization jeopardize players health? The players chose to play.

also, can we shut the fuck up about the Nomar deal? Nomar LIED about the extent of his injuries. He whined like a bitch. However when the Sox won the series what did they do? They gave Nomar a players cut of the winnings. That's pretty classy in my book. They didn't have to do it but they chose to. They said that he deserved it for what he did do while he was there.

Now, about Pedro. All I have to say is Fuck you Pedro. Sure you can have your ring; but you need to man up and quit bitching when you don't get every little thing you want. Let's see how far you can carry the Mets.

:D

I think a solution that would keep everyone happy would be for the Sox to give the ring to Pedro, inserted rectally.

/don't actually follow baseball

Would that be a URIA?

I believe it was the players who voted to give him a cut, but I may be wrong. If so, whether the Red Sox management liked Nomar or not, giving him a cut of the winnings is a great PR move. Not saying they did it for that reason, but we don't know if their intentions were truly classy.

As far as the ring, yes they should give it to him.

As far Pedro's comments, it isn't surprising. He hasn't had a great relationship with Boston the last several years. He commented on the possibility of playing for the Yankees while still employed by Red Sox, so I am not the least bit surprised by his comments once he is gone.

He said he was not happy with the way his agent was treated, he took it personally. I don't know the truth, nobody knows the truth. He is pitching great in NY, and the Red Sox are a great team.

Doctor_Max 04-13-2005 06:52 PM

Give him the ring. He helped the team win it, so he deserves it. He may try to act all tough through the media, but you know he wants it.

Ilow 04-14-2005 04:20 AM

Of course they will give him the ring. First, they had something like 500 made and they are giving them to practically everyone associated with the team last season, from the broadcasters and the team physician on down. Second, he pitched well for much of the season, and earned his ring. Third, they are a classy organization overall and try to do the right thing for their players and former players.
As far as Pedro's comments they were out of line, but not unexpected for the prima donna that he was. Pedro got away with a great deal as a Red Sox player, from leaving early from games to showing up late to spring training and yet the organization was always exceptionally supportive of him no matter what. The fans also gave him an enormous amount of support and hardly ever gave him grief for anything.
As a player, Pedro had a great run with the Red Sox, and his '99 season was one of the best ever by a pitcher in the modern age, however, Pedro has become a slilghtly above average pitcher over the last couple years. His ERA's have risen dramatically, and he is no longer able to pitch effectively after 100 pitches. He also has had a history of breaking down physically, and needing to be treated gently.
This brings us to his comments. Pedro has a problem. He equates money with respect. The Red Sox went as far as they could sensibly as far as meeting pedro's needs. They signed him to his option year way earlier than they had to, just to make him happy. Then they offered him a three year guarenteed contract, which was one year longer than they originally intended to guarentee, again, to try to appease Pedro. Pedro got greedy, and found a GM with more money than fiscal responsibility and who was desperate to drag fans out of the Bronx and into Shea and willing to sign a pitcher with a questionable probability of completing his contract. He than proceeded to badmouth an organization who had pretty much done everything he had asked for seven years and made him a hundred million, while consistantly surrounding him with quality players that allowed him to consistantly be on a competetive team. He's a big bitch. He could have left town as a hero, with a pat on the back and a "sorry it didn't work out," but he had to be a big mouthed jerk. If you want an example of how he could have acted, look at Derek Lowe. He pitched great in the playoffs, after a mediocre regular season, and the Sox chose not to try to sign him for the kind of money he could have commanded elsewhere. He was a remarkably durable pitcher with no health issues and a lot of upside, but the Sox chose to go in a differnt direction. Derek had no hard feelings, and returned for the ring ceremony and appeared to really enjoy himself, and nearly all Sox fans wish him the best. Same goes for all the former 2004 players, Cabrera, Reese, Roberts etc. All except Pedro.
Sorry for the long diatribe. I could have summed it up in one sentence: Pedro is a prima donna bitch.
Oh yeah, as far as their treatment of Nomar, he was never the same after the Sox attempted to sign A-Rod, but they were still classy to acknowledge his contributions over the years, and gave him a ring and a full share.
As for the Sox putting their players health at risk, the procedure had an extremely low probability of long term damage, or they wouldn't have done it, and yes, Curt said he requested the opportunity to have it, the team never even asked him.

Pedro's attitude runs a little deeper than the view of him being a PDB. What a lot of people don't realize is that Petey grew up in one of the poorest countries in the world: The Dominican Republic. He stated in a press conference during the playoffs that he is just thankful for the opportunities and abilities he has been given and that when he was a kid none of this seemed possible with him sitting under a mango tree with only a quarter in his pocket. As llow wrote, Pedro does equate money with respect. One can't really fault him with this attitude as I'm sure most of us did not grow up in the DR and can't possibly understand the mentality. Additionally, Pedro probably realizes his career is drawing to close (5 years tops) and the more money he earns, the more money he can put back into the DR; he's already built a couple of schools and hospital down there. If you were in his shoes and had a choice of 3yrs/$36M or 4yrs/$50M, I'm pretty sure the latter would be chosen. So to sum things up, what might be viewed as greediness or selfishness is really just Pedro looking out what matters to him the most: his homeland.

As good as Pedro and Lowe were for the Sox, I'd take Wells, Clement, and Miller for the same money. The reason? Three veteran arms in the playoffs as opposed to two. Also, all Wells has to do is beat Lowe's stats from last season of 5.42 ERA and 1.61 WHIP and the 3 to 2 pitcher exchange pays off. Wells is off to a slow start but being that he's post ERA's of 3.73 to 4.14 the past three seasons, I'm pretty confident he'll come around (it's still April).

I can't really explain wtf happened with Nomar. I know the majority of us (RSN) were pretty upset when he was traded but I think that was more of a sentimental reaction. Nomar has been on the decline in recent years and his fielding has been horrible (not the # errors but range at SS). I also think Sox management knew that he would cost them anywhere from $12M to $15M a season in a long term deal. For that kind of money, the Sox wrapped up Renteria (a superior fielder who will save runs) for $10M/season and were able to add some pitching depth (rotation and bullpen).

I don't want to speak for everyone but I've never faulted him for taking or wanting the extra money. However, he didn't need to be such a bitch about it.
