Another of the "few" Pats fans checking in here. I think what confuses people about the Patriots is that they look like a different team each week. The Playoffs were a great example of this. Indy: we're a slog-it-out, just keep running and short yardage team. Pittsburgh: rack up the points. Philly: mess with the offence just enough to force the turnovers. The Patriots morph to hit the weaknesses of whoever they are playing.

Rules is rules, buddy. It doesn't matter that it looked like a fumble, that's the way the Tuck rule is written, look it up. And, the Competition Committee didn't change the Tuck rule after that game either. Here's the best summary I could find, I'll pull up my rulebook at home tonight if you want.
Quote:
1. Once a qb intentionally moves his arm forward, he is attempting a forward pass.

2. If, instead of releasing the ball, he continues the motion backwards, toward his body, he is simultaneously attempting a forward pass (even though he has no intention of releasing the ball) and a tuck.

3. An attempted pass/tuck isn't a completed pass/tuck if the qb has not finished bringing the ball to his body before it is jarred loose due to the qb's unwanted contact with a defensive player.

4. The attempted pass/tuck thwarted by an aggressive defender should be ruled an incomplete forward pass--whether it has gone forward, backward or sideways--when the ball that the qb isn't trying to throw and doesn't want to lose hits the ground.

You don't need to explain the rule to me, I am fully aware of what is possibly the dumbest rule in sports history. What you don't seem to understand though is that his arm came to a dead stop before he had the ball knocked out, there was ZERO forward motion, therefore it is a fumbe. It's that simple.

I seem to recall a 2002 Philadelphia Eagles team that made the playoffs after Donovan McNabb was injured in November 2002. The backup made it through one game before being injured, and the third stringer (A.J Feeley - now with the Dolphins) had a winning record. It can happen.

But as everyone else is saying, you need a good front office to win consistently in today's NFL. Two of the best teams at cap management/personnel decisions have been the Pats and the Eagles. If you want to win one season, blow cap money. If you want to win consistently, choose the right players in the draft and don't overspend in free agency.

Let it go, man. Your "team" made it to the Super Bowl the following year.
