spurrier @ So. Carolina
So what do you all think about spurrier going to south carolina. I always knew he was a cock. Now I can sleep easy knowing he's not going to be coaching the 'fins.
|
Nicely put :p
Seriously though, a HELL of a pick up for The Other USC. Spurrier is a Hall-of-Fame college coach, and will have the Gamecocks going within two years. |
So, Spurrier thinks he's going to succeed where Lou Holtz couldn't? Obviously HE thinks he's that much better than Holtz, but you know....
Danny Ford said that Holtz couldn't turn the corner because South Carolina doesn't have a strong enough crop of high school talent. And if Spurrier couldn't out-recruit other coaches in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama while he was there, he certainly won't be able to walk in from South Carolina and steal talent away now. Proximity to Augusta National...that's all it is. |
I hope he fails miserably. Spurrier is an arrogant prick.
|
I can't stand Steve Spurrier. He's arrogant, and has absolutely no social skills. But, I'm glad he's back in college football so I can root against him and watch him lose. College football is all about recruiting talent. He always did a pretty good job at Florida recruiting athletes. But now I think his name is somewhat tarnished. It may be that prospective players feel that Spurrier could leave at any time, and its not worth the risk. I can't wait to see him throw his visor all of the place. its the best.
|
I hate Spurrier as much as anyone (I'm an FSU fan) but let's face it. THe guy's a good college level coach. He's an asshole but a good coach nonetheless. I'm just glad he isn't going to Florida. I think he'll help USC with recruiting and such and I think they'll make a bowl game in 2 years or so. He's good..I just don't want him coaching Florida ever again.

I have yet to figure out what would be the reasoning for this choice. There are a lot of other struggeling programs out there that would throw money at him and that would be a better situation to succeed I think. The idea that maybe he wants to try to show that he can do what Holtz has not is one of the only compelling reasons that stands out.
It just seems like such a rush job for a job tha tis not really all that..... |
what a sellout. not only did he punk gainesville...but he went to a college that plays them every year.
|
As a Gamecocks fan, this is about the best Thanksgiving-Christmas present I could possibly get.
The job Holtz did rebuilding the program is overlooked by many (even Gamecocks fans). He took over a team coming off a 1-10 season and went 0-11 his first year. He's gotten USC to the point that it can go into a game with UGA, UT or Fla thinking it has a shot to win, which is a nice change. With the solid foundation, everything is set up for Spurrier to have success. As far as the recruiting base is concerned, if OBC can just seal the border and keep the players at home, he'll have a much better team than you think. Tennessee and FSU, particularly, have picked many great players from S.C. And don't underestimate the pull that Spurrier has with recruits. Kids want to play in his offense. Of course, if Spurrier can't do it in Columbia, we might as well shut down the program. |
Damn, tough league that is full of history. That's the only thing that leads me to doubt his ability to put the Gamecocks back in the top-ten.
If Spurrier were to stay in the NFL, I think he would succeed, but the long hours simply aren't for him. Also, the most logical place, Miami, would require him returning to Florida, which he didn't want to do. |
Not only is the league tough, the division will be a killer if SOS can get the Gamecocks on par with Tenn, UGA and Fla. In fact, it might make it nearly impossible for a team from the SEC East to win a national title.
|
I'm not so sure if Spurrier will be able to recruit the kind of talent that he will need to run his high-powered offense. I don't think he'll do much better than Holtz, who was a fine coach.

You already have some of the top talent in the country looking at USC. Here is just one example: http://rivals100.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=357531
