Trinidad vs Mayorga...Sat/3rd
Any thoughts?
Hopefully this bout will last more than a round or two. I feel that either of them could knock the other out in the early rounds, but if the fight goes deep, Trinidad will probably win decisively. Mayorga's straight-forward style is tailor-made for Trinidad, but only if Tito can weather the early barrage of wild punches Mayorga will throw. I think this fight will boil down to how well Tito counterpunches, like in his fight with Joppy: every time Joppy overextended on a punch or missed wildly, Tito was there with the left hook or right cross. Mayorga takes a punch a lot better than Joppy though. Trinidad is one of the best fighters ever. Mayorga is not. If Mayorga can go the distance with Tito, and land some solid power punches along the way, he can maybe gain a little respect in the boxing world. A lot of people don't give him credit because of his style, or lack of it. But there's no denying he's a tough s.o.b. I'd really like to see Trinidad back in the boxing world, regardless of the outcome of this fight. I'd love to see him fight someone like Winky Wright or Jermaine Taylor.

I hope Mayorga wins because I love his tough-guy attitude and style. He smokes a cigarette and drinks a beer after he wins. Is this man crazy or what?
His style does play into Trinidads, but his punch won't let the fight get out of hand. Once he lands a couple of shots on Felix, he'll keep him at bay. No doubt Mayorga can take a punch, its just going to be a matter of how well prepared he is. Remember that he thought the fight was going to be cancelled because of sexual assault accusations brought up against him last month. He needs to finish this fight early, or he'll get worn down after the seventh. I say Mayorga knocks him out in the third.

What a fight! Best fight I've seen in a long time. Mayarga's a friggin madman. What a warrior. Trinidad looked unbelievable after such a long layoff.

He might be crazy, but he's never, ever been in the ring with an accurate, hard puncher. He's never been hit by a guy with good handspeed, and IMO, the best pure puncher in the middleweight division.
Trinidad knocked his ass out, thank god. Maybe now Mayorga has been exposed enough, with an apparent weak body, and no idea how to adjust to a fight, or get out of the way of a punch, or block one for christ sake. I could live the rest of my life and never seen Mayorga fight again. Trinidad was on tonight, he's now right in the thick of things at 160. |

That was an AWESOME fight! Trinidad looked amazing out there. His accuracy was just perfect and after the layoff of 2+ years he is seriously going to give the 160 class a run. Good for him, I think Mayorga needs to go back down a class and own it.

Wow that was awesome to watch. Tito showed absolutely no rust after the layoff. And Mayorga did not come out swinging as I thought he would. I think gaining so much weight hurt him. He should definitely go back down in weight.
Let's hope Tito fights Winky or someone else deserving of the opportunity to fight him. He looked amazing. Holy shit Mayorga took some serious punches. Talk about heart. I'm glad the ref stopped it because Mayorga would have kept getting up until he was damaged permanently.

I dunno Doc, I think the only viable Trinidad fight now in everyones eyes, except maybe you and I, is Trinidad/Hopkins 2, and I really don't want to see that again. The first fight was almost sad, it looked like this one, except Hopkins dominated.
I was surprised, Trinidad paid very close attention to Spinks, moving to the side, keeping Mayorga's sweeping left hand off balance. He just punished him. Trinidad is an amazing, accurate puncher. Trinidad looked amazing against a guy with no defense, and the inability to punch straight ahead. He's going to need tuneups against guys with real ability. Beating Mayorga doesn't take great technical skill, it takes a slight bit of movemet, and the guts to stay inside with him, Trinidad did just that. I must say this though, and I don't mean to take it off topic, Hopkins said 4 or 5 fights, I say 4. Trinidad, Taylor, Winky Wright, and Tarver. Maybe Felix Sturm for a tune up. Depends if he's after money, or fighting the best. Last edited by Kurant; 10-03-2004 at 06:41 AM.. |

Kurant I agree with everything in your above post, especially the part about not wanting to see another Trinidad/Hopkins. There are so many other good fights for him out there.
The one thing that makes me optimistic about the situation is that both Trinidad and Hopkins have a lot of integrity. They know who the best fighters are out there and I think they will try to make those fights happen. Unfortunately, if they are both successfull, and I think they will be, the public will clamor for a rematch. I'm not saying Trinidad couldn't win, it just doesn't seem realistic and the fight doesn't appeal to me. And I think beating Mayorga does take a bit of skill; Trinidad didn't get hit once with one of those bombs...he dodged every single one of them and landed at an amazing percentage. He beat Mayorga to the punch from the opening bell, wich suprised me. I thought Mayorga would swarm him. Tito wasn't messing around when he said he'd been training for the last six months. Anyway, what a dominant performance. Definitely worth the money this time around. When Mayorga boastfully put his chin out there for Trinidad to hit, I knew the fight was over. What was he thinking? What a jackass.

Great fight. I hope Mayorga keeps at it, he didn't do bad and showed a ton of heart (or madness).
Trinidad looked awesome. He should look for some more opponents, but I also wouldn't want to see him fight Hopkins.

apparently Mayorga told a local paper he's retiring which is a shame. He has a lot of power, and with the right trainer he could be a more effective boxer puncher (look at arturo gattis transformation). he seemed a little too soft at 160, but would have a shot against anybody at 154 IMO.
It will be interesting to see Trinidad in with Hopkins, or even DLH or winky. I can't see the Hopkins-trinidad fight going any other way than the first one off of Tito's recent performance. |
