The Padres (tied with the Chargers) make the dumbest decisions when it comes to the front office.
Check out this trade from last year (with this year's stats) They got Brian Giles from the Pirates who is having a decent year: .278 15HR 63RBI and 33years old For These two guys: Oliver Perez 130 Innings, 7-7 Record (on a bad team) and a 3.13 ERA. Oh yeah - he is a leftie and 22 years old Jason Bay .301BA 14HR 46RBI in only 70 games. He is 25 years old and won the NL Rookie of the month the last two months after taking over in RF Just Oliver Perez was too much. An effective young Left hander? Yeah get rid of him. The thing is that the Pads should be happy to finish over .500 at all compared to where they have been the last few years. That being said, why then mortgage the future for a 33y/o RFer? They are going to always suck. They are lucky to be 6.5 games out. Dummies

Perez, what a joke of a trade. I still can't believe they did that. Considering the numbers he put up at such a young age in the minors (17.09 k/9, 2.52 k/bb before he could even drink) they should have held on to him like he was gold.
I still think the DBacks make worse trades. We traded Durazo for Dessens (historically ineffective), Penny for Mantei (always injured), and Shilling for Fossum (ineffective). |

I'm not sure the Perez/Bay deal was bad at the time for the Padres. Giles was a legitimate superstar and they gave up 2 unproven rookies, one of whom was a 24-year old OF who had little MLB experience and had bounced around a few teams. Those guys don't usually turn out as well as Bay did.
You can make excuses for the Padres. To some degree, GIles' numbers have been held down by Petco. And he had a down 2002 because of injuries, and he had a slow 2003 because of trade rumors. Before that he was one of the top 5 hitters in baseball and he was still young.

You wanna talk about chokers?! The Astros have been a downward spiral for months now. Looks like another year with no postseason. Man, not even the Rocket can save us now. Baseball season always breaks my heart....

This is the year for the Dodgers!!
Just as soon as they realize that trying to have Dreifort be the setup man for Gagne is a really stupid idea. Oh why did they trade Mota away?
