Jamison to Wizards

The Dallas Mavericks, while still hoping to convince the Los Angeles Lakers to send them Shaquille O'Neal, have completed a trade on the eve of the NBA draft that could have additional significance, ESPN.com has learned.

The Mavericks, according to league sources, have acquired the No. 5 overall pick in Thursday's draft from Washington as part of a package that features Antawn Jamison, the newly minted Sixth Man of the Year, as the prize catch for the Wizards.

The other players involved in the deal were not immediately known, but it is anticipated that that Mavericks will receive two players from Washington. Sources, however, say the Mavericks hope to use the No. 5 pick -- or possibly another player or players acquired in the deal -- to sweeten the package they can offer the Lakers in exchange for the disgruntled O'Neal. It is also possible, sources say, that the Mavericks will pursue additional trades with the other pieces they land from Washington.

It is not known when the trade will be announced.

ESPN.com reported late Tuesday that, according to Lakers sources, L.A. refuses to deal O'Neal to their Western Conference rival unless Dallas makes Dirk Nowitzki available. Mavericks sources maintain that Nowitzki remains off-limits, but the prospect of adding the No. 5 pick to a package that could include point guard Steve Nash (via sign-and-trade), Antoine Walker (who has just one year left on his contract) and promising rookie Josh Howard should at least get the Lakers' attention.

If the Lakers do eventually consent to trade O'Neal, in the wake of Shaq's demand for a trade last week, their goal would be injecting their roster with quality youth and depth to surround Kobe Bryant.

If the Mavericks can't swing a subsequent deal for the No. 5 pick, they will undoubtedly weigh the merits of drafting Pavel Podkolzine, the 7-foot-5 center from Russia.

Jamison's appeal to the Wizards is obvious. Instead of gambling on more youth at No. 5 with an inexperienced roster already, Washington gets an established frontcourt scorer who should contend for an All-Star spot in the East after accepting a bench role without complaint in Dallas.
I am curious as to whom the "package of players" is, but I think this is an ok deal.

Horrible deal if they don't turn that pick around FAST.

This is the time to swoop in and get Shaq, and with a package of Walker, Nash, Howard AND the fifth pick, that's how you rebuild a team. That's Walker, Nash, Payton, and Howard coming off the bench, nice rebuilding material.

Drafting a Russian center like that equals a WASTED PICK for the Mavs.

The deal is the pick, Stackhouse, and Laettner.

You'd think they have too many overpaid 2-3 guys (Walker) and white stiffs (Bradley).

So the Wizards rid themselves of two guys they were begging Charlotte to take, and a pick they don't really want, and get a guy who's only a sixth man because of a man by the name of Dirk.

don't worry dj, the Celtics will be in the wings waiting to deal for more of Dallas' clumsy white guys. perhaps this time Ainge will deal Pierce for Bradley and Laettner, and then sign Nash to a 10 year deal. again, I really miss the 80's and Larry.

Too bad Ainge didn't crash land the team earlier, or you might have had a shot at a decent pick.

Of course, next year he may be the last guy laughing, you never know. He seems to have SOME sort of a plan...

As a Wizards fan, this is another bad trade in a long line of bad trades. Jordans gone, so who is Abe going to blame now? Sure you get rid of Stack and Laetner, but I believe Stack only had a two year deal (maybe even one year left), around 9 million per year. I can't find the info. on the trade.

Essentially, we are taking on a max contract that runs through 06-07 for what I believe is 6 years at $85 million. We are losing the 5th pick, which many projected to be Deng out of Duke. He is a big body. Jamsion isnt a defender, the Wizards need defense. He can score points, but so can Arenas, Hughes, Hayes, Dixon, and Kwame. The one thing none of those guys are known for is their defense. I would have liked to see Jeffries and Hayes split time at the three next year.

However, I believe the Wizards either led or were in the top 2 in commiting turnovers per game. Arenas and Hughes need the ball in their hands, which doesn't help that. Jamison shot a high percentage last year, and can pick up a lot of his points off offensive rebounds.

Ovearll, as a fan, I don't like the trade. Keep the number 5, trade Stack away for somebody decent, and have Hayes and Jeffries split time at the three.
