just saw a passing clip on the tv about bonds saying he would never play in boston because it is too racist there? anyone heard this? if he did say it does it put him in the same boat as john rocker? never had any respect for bonds to begin with (as a person, as a player he is awesome). god i hope they found out he was on steroids. will serve him right, although he'll claim its the whiteman trying to keep him down....................by pay him millions of dollars a year

I really don't care.

It's not a particularly smart comment to make, although he did say that he "knows" it from talking with other players.

I've never been to Boston, so I don't know how the racial climate is up there, but Boston WAS the last team to sign a black player, and some NBA player (I can't recall who, but it was last season) did publically call the people there racists, so something tells me not to just pass it off as a "Stupid Athlete Quote".

Rocker says it and is shunned by the media and all of baseball; but if Bonds says the same thing it's perfectly acceptable and there is no media outcry.

Bonds is an unlikeable guy and he brings it all on himself. People don't dislike him because he is black; they dislike him because he comes off as being stuck-up and above everyone else.

Bonds is a great ballplayer, and he alone sells out Giants' games, but he is also a player that has a lot of enemies due to his actions and comments.

Before Bonds claims Boston is too racist a place for him to play, he may want to actually visit it on vacation first. At least then he won't come off as being completely ignorant.

Rocker didn't call people racists, he made racist comments.

In other words, the absolute opposite of this.

and brian, your comments seemed a little racist as well. But then again, I am a huge fan of Barry Bonds.. He seems like a nice guy to me, but I guess it is just "cool" to dislike him right now.. Whatever..

It's weird if Bonds thinks this why be so uncouth as to say thats the reason. Say Boston's too cold or something but I feel his comments are idiotic. Another reason I believe we shouldn't put microphones in front of athletes.

Bonds didn't even say the same thing. He just said he felt the city was too racist, he didn't start spouting off bullshit about specific races, or people, nothing.

It's not the same, it will never be the same. As much as you want to crucify Bonds. Is it right? Probably not. Is it just? Who knows. But it's Barry Bonds. This is what he lives for, and does every day. Mavels people who read too much into tiny-little bullshit things and makes the media explode because they can't find anyone else to tear down.

It's Barry, if ya don't like it. Don't listen. He's an idiot.

I dunno where you been, but the Red Sox ownership has a legacy of racism. They were the last team in the league to integrate. They kept an all-white team on the field for years, even in spite of a terrible record. It's got it's reputation.

sorry if my comment seems racist but it was the least of my intent. but if the second part of your comment is directed toward my view of barry, than that is wrong as well. first off, bonds has always been a bit of a nut, still appreciate him as a player though as he is the best hitter in the game, possibly all time. but i am NOT saying that because it is cool. this is the same as people who see an old man driving a sports car and think he is "compensating" for something he does not have. assuming something makes an ass out you and me. i hate it when people say that you only like something because its "cool". sorta like how people react if you say your a fan of a popular band, almost like your not allowed to be a fan if did not have there first album sorta speak. I don't think its "cool" to like barry, his 73 homeruns and his chase of aaron do that for me. if your comments were not directed at what i said than please disregard.

i've been in canada, never to boston, i've read articles and such that refer to racisim in places like boston in the past, but did not think it translates into todays game, nor was i aware that boston had a racisim issue in todays time. don't bostonians love pedro and ortiz? or is "fake" love? i just don't think barry can lump theo and management in with the owners/fans of 50 years past. if i am wrong than please forgive me as i had no idea that boston was still racist. guess i can add one more thing i hate boston for now....(die hard jay fan ) did pittsburg or san fran never have any race issues or was it just boston?

I live in Boston and I think this city has tons of racism. BUT, Bonds stated that he hadn't been here and he was going by what he heard. That is a clear form of stereotyping and racism on his own part. How can you say something when you don't know first hand? I think this man is ignorant.

I don't think its cool to hate on Barry Bonds right now. More like, he is entitled to his opinions but he has made some pretty in my mind dumb comments in the past. The preception that he puts out is that hes just a me first asshole. One that stands out particularly in my mind is when he commented on how much better he was than Babe Ruth.

"Willie's number is always the one that I've strived for," Bonds said before the All-Star Game on Tuesday. "And if it does happen, the only number I care about is Babe Ruth's. Because as a left-handed hitter, I wiped him out. That's it. And in the baseball world, Babe Ruth's everything, right? I got his slugging percentage and I'll take his home runs and that's it. Don't talk about him no more."

Statistically it is the truth. But his arrogance to suggest such a thing in my mind is what sets him apart from what the Babe is and what others like Willy Mays and Ted Williams. Those men are legends, when Bonds retires and years down the line, I don't think we'll be talking about him in a myth like status that we do for other ballplayers. Bonds is just too me first for me to really latch onto him.

Keep in mind that Babe Ruth has a assload of shutouts, and then transitioning from pitcher to hitter to become one of the greatest hitters of all time.

If he was talking about Red Sox Management, I couldn't possibly comment as I've never met any of them. If he was talking about the fans in general then he's an idiot (well he might be an idiot no matter what). But Mo Vaugh was among the most loved and respected players in Boston for many many years. Last I checked he wasn't white and they still loved him. But hey, what do I know.

Well Boston did make a great team with Bird and McHale (both white), BUT they also loved Jim Rice.

I think Boston is a great sports town that doesn't put up with BS and tries to win in all sports. Cincy has the exact same rep, yet they have made stars of Eric Davis, Barry Larkin, Joe Morgan, and so on.

Racism truly cannot exist in sports today (not that it should anywhere). All the owners are businessmen now and watch the profit/loss. They go out and get whoever will help them win white/black/latin/asian whatever.

In the end it's all in the press a player gets. The press in a town either loves you or hates you. Perhaps Boston's press just dislikes Bonds and to him that is racist.
