Kim on the DL, going back to Korea for treatment

The BK story continues to unfold. The Sox have finally put him back on the DL and he's going to get treatment in Korea.

Kim will seek a home remedy

PAWTUCKET -- Byung-Hyun Kim is heading back to South Korea.

The right-handed submarine pitcher has been hampered by back and hip injuries of late. Yesterday he spoke with Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and the club decided to grant Kim an excused absence to return home to see a specialist. Currently, there's no timetable for his return.

It's been a rollercoaster season for the 25-year-old pitcher, who suffered a shoulder injury during spring training and hasn't returned to form since.

When Kim returned from the disabled list earlier in the season, Boston manager Terry Francona was quite adamant about using him as the club's No. 5 starter. Kim's two-year $10-million contract could have been a factor in the manager's decision, so he moved Bronson Arroyo to the bullpen and started Kim.

Prior to his recall to Boston on April 29, Kim made two starts for the PawSox. On April 19, he worked 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run (unearned) on four hits with two strikeouts. On April 24, he worked four scoreless innings, giving up two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Kim returned to the Red Sox starting rotation on April 29 and worked five scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out two. He was roughed up in his next two starts and was subsequently optioned to Pawtucket on May 13.

Since then, he's made two starts. On May 14, he worked two innings, allowing three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one. On May 18, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out two.

There's been speculation that Kim was using the back injury as an excuse for his sub-par performances. But Pawtucket manager Buddy Bailey tried to dispel that

notion last night.

"He's been up front and honest," said Bailey. "He said he was having stiffness in his hip all along. During his last outing he had some stiffness in his hip and it migrated to his back. So something's going on there."

Kim was scheduled to start last Saturday, but because of the tightness, Bailey and the club's training staff thought it best to hold him back. Kim was able to throw a bullpen session on Sunday and afterwards he felt fine. It didn't respond yesterday, so he spent the day in Boston discussing his options with Epstein.

So, he's off to Korea to see a specialist.

"He wants to put this thing behind him," said Bailey. "So, hopefully some good news will come when he gets over there and the guy can figure out what the problem is and have a quick remedy for it."
I hope he can recover. He's always been one of my favorite pitchers that has continuously been trashed by the press. He's still only 25.

Giving up 2 straight games in the world series will kinda paint a target on your ass by itself. That guy STILL needs a sports psychologist years after that.

That did nothing to faze him. How wrecked could he have been when he came back from those destructive losses and had the best year of his career. The kid gets no respect whatsoever. Lots of pitchers don't even step foot in a big league clubhouse till they're 25 and he has several years of experience under his belt with a very good ERA.

The anguish of those World Series losses is microscopic in comparsion to what it would have been if they lost the entire World Series.

People like to bring it up, but the D-Backs did win...

Maybe he can take Chan Ho Park with him and leave him there.

I don't understand why the media hates that kid so much. I hate saying racism, but it's pretty close. I read one article that said he's failed as a closer and failed as a starter. Looking at his numbers:
Overall he has a 3.33 ERA in 414 IP, 9.85 k/9 innings, 2.6 K/BB, opponents hit .206/.301/.323 off him. He's converted 86 of 108 save chances.
As a starter, last year he went 3-6 with a 3.38 ERA. His strikeouts went down, but so did his walks. Looking at that, where is the failure?

He's injured so things look down for him right now but I see no reason why he still won't develop into a very solid #2 starter for a contending team. I don't know what people expect from him.

It's not that the media hates him or anything it's just that when he's been in the spotlight (i.e.,against the Yankees) he has imploded.

I think his failure is in pressure situations. I can't tell you how many times I watched him falter in pressure situations last year. He would bean consecutive batters, walk , than get pounded. I would like to see left handers batting avg. against him. I bet it's tremendous.
I think Kim has some really good stuff and I hope he can come back and contribute. I saw him pitch about 8 times last year in Boston and he had awesome movement. I honestly think Kim's woes are much like Derek Lowe's so I don't see racism being involved. He just needs some confidence and a good shrink.

Last year, lefties hit .221/.319/.342 off him. That is the whole year though so it could be a lot higher in Boston. Either way its a high OBP for LH hitters.

when he was here with AZ, he really didnt get that much respect, nor did he give it. he wanted to be a starter, which i dont blame him, he was in Korea....but when he pitched for us, it just didnt seem like he cared. it was almost like "why the fuck do i have to do this shit, i'm better than that" and it showed. IF he had worked his hardest and given Brenly the respect he deserved it would have been resiprocated.

he's also got a big fucking attitude. it was much like he didnt care if the team won, as long as he looked good. he gave the finger the the Boston fans during a game (big no no). sure the kid has talent, a lot of players do....but what kind of "bad boy" gets good press coverage. AI gets shit, so does R Wallace, the whole Trailblazers for that matter.

but this kid did have some MAD TALENT. at 25 he's recorded 453 Ks in 414 innings and for his career and an ERA under 3.33. i personally think that this kid should have been given more of a chance with us. he could have proved himself, and really wanted to. i feel bad for him in a way, but i also dont like the attitude.

I'm just sick of people (like my father) who think he's just some flash in the pan average pitcher who will never amount to anything.

At the time we traded him, he was pitching better than anyone on the team but he wasn't getting run support. Why they thought Hillenbrand was worth him I'll never figure out.
