PLEASANTVILLE, N.J. -- A basketball coach who gave a 13-year-old player a "Crybaby Award" will be banned from coaching, sent to sensitivity training and ordered to make a public apology.

Schools superintendent Edwin Coyle revealed the punishments Wednesday. Whether the coach loses his job remains to be seen.

James Guillen, 24, a third-year special education teacher at the Pleasantville Middle School, had a trophy made up showing an infant atop a pedestal, with a plaque bearing the inscription of player Terrence Philo Jr. and the words "Crybaby Award.''

Terrence was spelled "Terrance."

After summoning the boy to attend the April 24 season-ending banquet, Guillen gave him the trophy, humiliating him in front of about 25 teammates and parents.

On Tuesday, the nine-member Pleasantville Board of Education voted to fire Guillen, rejecting Coyle's recommendation for lighter sanctions.

But state law mandates that hiring and firing recommendations come from the superintendent, not board members.

As a result, the vote to dismiss Guillen wasn't valid, according to Frank Belluscio, a spokesman for the New Jersey School Boards Association.

"It's not binding. It's not proper procedure," Belluscio said.

Coyle, who said dismissal would be too severe a punishment, said he would ban Guillen from ever coaching in Pleasantville schools and order the sensitivity training and public apology.

In addition, Guillen will be ordered to hold the banquet again and give Philo the trophy other players received. A veteran teacher also will be assigned to mentor Guillen.

Coyle said he would ask the board a second time to authorize a five-day suspension without pay and the forfeiture of a $3,000 pay raise due to Guillen.

The boy's father, Terrence Philo, said he would leave the penalty to school officials.

"I just want what's right. I want my son to have a trophy and certificate like everyone else got. No less, no more," he said.

Guillen, who has yet to speak publicly about the incident, remains on the job as a special education teacher at the school.

Loser

If that were my kid, the coach wouldn't have made it out alive from the first banquet.

Kinda funny if you think about it. Things like this are different among every team. It also varries on the boys relationship with his coach. When I was younger, if I, or someone else received that award it would have probly been all in good fun. But who knows in this situation...

Wouldn't that just be more embarassing?
Like Warwagon, if a coach did that to a child of mine, he wouldn't make it off the stage in one piece.
And did I read it right when it said that these were special ed students? Not that I condone making fun of normally-adjusted children, but a grown man picking on kid with special needs is like a bodybuilder fighting a triple amputee.
Throw his ass in jail, let him get raped, then present him with the Crybaby Award.

Hell, I think it's funny. I coached for about 5 years at my High School and every year there was a kid I woulda loved to have given an award like that too. Some kids are fucking cry babies. If my kid recieved an award like that I'd say he probably deserved it. The reason kids are such pussies now a days is because parents will stick up for their kids even when they are cry babies.... I think it's pathetic.

It probably was in very bad taste to do it on that stage, if he would have been more pc about it, this wouldn't have made the news. But he opened his mouth too wide, and he has to eat it. Our world is so frickin' pc now, that coaches can't even light heartedly joke with kids for fear of offending some.

I have been a coach for over 23 years and stories like this make me sick. Regardless of the situation, no child(and yes a 13 year old is still a child) should be subjected to this. That person(not coach) should not be allowed near any children. Who is to say he wouldn't do something as ingnorant with his spec. ed. kids. Sorry, but no compassion here.

Insane

I'm guessing the kid was a piece of work, if he drove a special ed teacher crazy.

This was probably an attempt, by the coach, to teach a potentially valuable lesson, executed horribly.

It is always good to bounce a crazy idea off a person or two before going forward with it.

Thanks for listening.

He must have been one hell of a crybaby for the coach to go out of his way to get a special trophy made.
