Classic sports photos..What image does it for you?

This image has to be one of the best boxing photos ever.
So many emotions can be conveyed.

Post a pic of a sporting event/achievement that you cherish.
Just an idea for a thread as I don't think it has been done here before.

Muhammad Ali vs. Cleveland Williams
Houston Astrodome, November 14, 1966

I cant find it... but it's a picture of the Packers beating the Cowboys on the final play of the game (in the ice bowl?), and it has the running back raising his hands above his head as he falls over bart starr while he does a surprise qb sneak

so classic, plus im a MASSIVE pack fan... so it holds a special place in my heart

That picture of Ali is great.

I saw a cool picture of Fred Lynn and Pete Rose sitting in a bar during the All Star game, which has Rose flipping the middle finger. Not a classic sports moment but a good picture of some drunks.

whish i could find that pic.

The picture, taken from the rail, of Secretariat in the Belmont, where over his shoulder you can see, some thirty lengths behind, the rest of the field.

I like that one where Arrington is making road kill of a certain Cowboy QB and takes him out of the game and as it turns out, out of his career.

No, I don't like seeing a good man get hurt in reality. But my carnal mind really enjoyed seeing a rival such as the cowboys get stuffed (even though I think we lost the game. Can't recall now but we lost most of them)

I'll try to find the pic though...

Im guessing those are immediately post 9/11

because to me its not that classic... i see a huge canadian flag get waved at halftime of BC Lions games, but I guess it's the context... IF they are in fact the week after 9/11

I tend to agree... not that classic. The one in Oakland was last year... Tennessee at Oakland for the AFC championship.

FWIW, I remember this one... what a great moment.

I was just soooo sick of the Cowboys by the time this game was played.

Montana to Clark was just the cure!

This one is my favorite. For years, until I saw the TV replay, because it seems as if he is magically floating, I thought he actually scored the goal while diving like that when, in fact, it kind of half celebratory leap and half trying not to get tripped by the goalie's stick.

This picture has a lot of meaning for me. It's Go For Wand during the 1990 Breaders Cup Distaff. She was leading the race and took a bad step, stumbled and flipped over. She then got up and stepped on her bad leg, and it just snapped in hafl. She hobbled around on the track for what seemed like forever. Finally an outrider came and caught her reigns and comforted her. She was put to sleep right there on the track.

All on national television. I was 12 when this happened and all I can remember is watching this in shock.

More pictures can be found here http://www.angelfire.com/realm2/classical0/gfw.html
but they are pretty horrible to look at

I don't know if this is why this thread started, but did you see the SI special issue about sports photography over the last 50 years or so? So many great shots, including the first one from this thread (boxing shot). I particularly love the shot of Jordan hitting the shot in the Fianls against the Jazz. I love looking at the people's faces in the crowds and trying to guess what they were thinking at that time.

Maybe not a real "classic" sports pic but it does define Richters excellent style. Mike Richter was the reason I started playing goal. A great and humble guy who could do the splits like nobody else.
