Pride GP Round 1
Now that the 16 man tournament is about to finally begin I'm kind of disappointed. Half the field doesn't really deserve to be there. Nonetheless, the final three fights (later this year) should be amazing. Here are my predictions:
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Mark Coleman Coleman is the previous GP champ and should not be discounted. He's an amazing wrestler and hasn't been taken down once as I can recall. Unfortunately his cardio has never been stellar and he is now older. Fedor on the other hand, comes out like a wrecking machine and doesn't stop. The new Ground and Pound will beat the old. Winner: Emelianenko, 2R TKO Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira vs. Yokoi Hirotaka I know nothing about Yokoi and that would probably mean he's fodder. Nog has a granite chin and is the best heavyweight grappler. Winner: Nogueira, 2R TKO (armbar) Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs. Kevin Randleman Even though I can't stand Cro Cop, this is his fight. It will be interesting to see how well he can sprawl Randleman's takedown. I'm cheering for Donkey Kong but this is going to be a bloody mess. Winner: Filipovic, 1R KO Heath Herring vs. Yoshiki Takahashi Herring hasn't looked too good as of late but his losses have been to the best. Takahashi is a relatively smaller fighter from the Pancrase organization who I don't see winning. Winner: Herring, 2R TKO (Rear-naked choke) Sergei Kharitonov vs. Murilo Ninja This is going to be the best fight of the first round, IMO. Fedor has only said good things about Kharitonov, whom he trains with. Recently he made quick work of the freakshow LA Giant, but he's still green. Ninja is more experienced but he's lost to all of his good opponents except for Mario Sperry. Winner: Ninja, Unanimous Decision Stefan "Blitz" Leko vs. Ogawa Naoya Leko is a good, former K-1 fighter making his jump to MMA. He has been working on his ground game with none other than Sakuraba but there's only so much that can be absorbed in a week of training. Ogawa is an Olympic-level Judo fighter with an MMA record of 5-0 and I expect him to humble Leko. Winner: Ogawa, 1R TKO (kimura) Sentoryu vs. Giant Silva Wow. I couldn't care less about this. A sumo against a pro-wrestling freak. Winner: Sentoryu, Unanimous Decision Semmy Schilt vs. Gan McGee Schilt is a pretty good striker and has even given Ernesto Hoost problems in K-1. McGee is a better wrestler but he's generally not impressive. Winner: Schilt, Unanimous Decision Looking at the entire tournament, I conclude that Fedor is the man. |

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES? YES! (spoilers below in case anyone cares)
Good night Mr. Filipovic. Donkey Kong is fired up and Mirko thinks about becoming a full-time action star. I went 5 for 8 in my predictions and I'm glad I wasn't completely accurate. The winners of the night: |
