Sapp to Raiders

With this and the signing of Washington think it will help the men in black, or is the offense too old still to have an impact anymore? |
Hmmmm ...I live in a place where profession football is still just a fantasy and players like SAPP use our franchises as bait to set the bar higher for clubs willing to pay more cabbage/scratch/jack/dough rae mi/green salad of salvation.
SAPP will help them be better on defense but as the saying goes the best defense is a good offense. Time will tell if they will contend. |
Sapp and Washington will help.....again, short term thinking for the Raiders.
They did this with their offense a few years ago with Rice, Garner and Gannon. Short term---great.....but then they all get really old at the same time. They run the risk of doing the same thing on defense. As bad as they were last year on defense...anything will be an improvement. |
Good move for the Raiders, two big DL's should help the worst run defense last year.
Meanwhile, they can bolster their passing game by picking Fitzgerald 2nd overall (unless they trade down which would be complete idiocy). |
This might end up being a good move for the Raiders, if Sapp can have a better year. Its definitely going to be tough for teams to run against the raiders, but they have way more problems than that.

He might help the Raiders. I don't follow them enough to know their complete needs.
I can speak for his tenure with the Bucs. Sapp fell through to the second round after rumor of his ganja use came out days before the draft. The Bucs in those days would take any break they could get and Sapp was happy to get 2nd round $$. When Sapp came out of UM at 295# he was a monster. The O-linemen were 275 and he played against the right tackle and guard who are usually the smallest of the OL. Now the OL are 325 and Sapp is 300 and ten years older. He is a good player and a good pass rusher, but don't count on him to clog up the run. That is why we are letting him go. The true run stopping tackles now weigh 350. I compare what happened to Sapp and Lynch to people in the real world who get laid-off by their 'big company' employer. They both have worked for the same company for +/- 10 years. They have never worked for anyone else. They have been loyal employees and good teammates. But now the boss calls you in and says 'We like you, but we are going to go a different direction'. It's like getting kicked in the stomach. I'd bet 50% of us have had it happen to us. These guys will survive and maybe flourish, just like the rest of us have. (I will admit it would have been nice to have been making 3 mil a year before being laid off though :) :) |

i was a little surprised that sapp went to oakland becasue when they signed washington i thought they might change to a 3-4. with the addition of sapp that changes everything. |
I heard that they were still going to run the 3-4, but with Sapp on the end. He plays more like a DE anyway, because he spends more time disrupting the pass than the run, one of the main problems with the Bucs defense last year, they didn't have any run stoppers on the line. Combining Washington with Sapp seems to be a pretty good idea though, a runstopper and a disruptive force for the qb to deal with, but it seems to me that the Raiders still have some problems on the other side of the ball.

The sad thing is that this actually lowers the average age of the players on the Raiders roster.

The Raiders could sign the local chapter of the AARP and the average age of the roster would still dip. |

I don't know what the hell is up with the Raiders. They seem to love getting the older players. They just signed Ray Buchanan from the Falcons a week or two ago. He's old as hell and they gave him a 5-yr contract!?!?
|
Sapp is old, he is still good, but i doubt he is going to make much impact on oakland's defense
|
He will fit in there better. The Raiders have always taken the egomaniacs of the NFL, the get along with Al Davis fine, birds of a feather.....
|
They also got Buchanon, so Sapp, Washing, and Buchanon will help any failing defence.
|
The D by default will improve, (no where to go but up) they could use some line backing help, and it would not surprise me to see them trade down, get get: WR, O line men, d-end, LB, in that order. I did hear the rumor Redskins and Raiders trying to make a deal, Samuels and draft pick for Raiders spot, (Redskins want Gallery) the Raiders could still get a great WR that way.
|
What can I say, Sapp is the perfect player for the Raiders mentality...
