Henson to Dallas

Cowboys acquire QB Henson

06:41 PM CST on Friday, March 12, 2004

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

The Cowboys have traded a third-round draft pick in 2005 to acquire former Michigan star quarterback Drew Henson, a source close to negotiations said.

The Cowboys have signed Henson to an eight-year contract which guarantees him at least $3.5 million. If he gets 15 percent of the snaps in 2004, he will receive $3.5 million immediately and will shorten the contract length to four years. If he plays 70 percent of the snaps in any of his first three seasons, his base salary will increase by $1 million.

Because of the complex nature of the contract, the deal still needs approval from the NFL's management council.

Henson will receive a base salary of $238,000 in 2004.

w00t, now they need an RB.

Finally, a team bit and the Texans stole a draft pick.

Only played nine college games. Hasn't played ANY games in three years. I think this might have passed the Champ Bailey-and-pick for Clinton Portis deal as the stupidest deal of the offseason.

This is quite a gamble. I believe Henson won't pan out. Everyone is just looking for the next Tom Brady.

This is for a 3rd round pick next year, which is considered a 4th pick this year. This kid is still only 24 years old and is thought to be a franchise quarterback. I think its pretty reasonable to take a chance on guy who is thought of this highly for what is essentially a 4th round pick and little money.

more like the next Elway, Aikman with this kid.

A gamble to me would be giving up a proven player---or multiple picks for him.

Henson for a 3rd?? I can sleep at night not worrying about the ramifications of that trade.

Why would this be the stupidest deal of the offseason? A 2005 3rd round pick for Drew Henson? Thats a steal. Both teams are happy and now the 'Boys might have found a viable backup to Quincy Carter.

The stupidest move of the offseason is the short-term thinking of Dan Snyder. They Redskins better win a Super Bowl in the next three years, or fans in Washington are in for some baseball-esque "rebuilding."

It's a stupid deal because Henson will need several years to get ready, and Quincy Carter isn't the answer in Dallas. They needed to trade for a Tim Couch, not Drew Henson.

The only teams that this deal would make sense for is a team like Green Bay, who have a aging QB but still have a couple years until a new one is needed. They can afford to take the risk because they can develop a QB.

A couple bad games in Dallas and they'll be calling for Henson, and I sure hope Parcells can convince Jones to have patiance.

This isn't a bad move on the cowboys part. In fact I think it's a pretty good move. They needed another qb and henson will be that guy. I think that he needs a little work out, but other than that he proved to everyone at his workout that he is still a good quarterback... I am biased because I love the wolverines but still, he was a damn good qb here, and I think he'll have a hell of a career.

Backup to Quincy Carter? Carter is one of the worst QBs in the NFL right now. He is absolutely horrible. They need to stop looking for backups and get a real QB.

Exactly right.

Henson needs to develop. Quincy Carter is a very short-term answer, and Chad Hutchinson should be the very example for why this trade was a bad move.

They would've been better off signing Jeff Garcia as the starter and then drafting a QB or trading for Henson. That way he gets a couple years as a backup to learn, then can go in and contribute.

Also remember he only played nine games in his college career. Most NFL quarterbacks start at least two or three years before going to the NFL.

The only problem with aquiring jeff garcia is that he is beginning to get injured a lot. Plus I don't think he will be as good as he was. Henson will do fine... he just needs a little time. Mid-season he'll be ready to go, if he gets some snaps in the beginning of the regular season.

This was a good move by Dallas. They gave up virtually nothing and got what many people consider to be a very good young quarterback. I am still surprised they aren't going after Couch.
