Lang to Wings

for Tomas Fleischmann, a first round pick in 2004 and a fourth round pick in 2006. From a Caps fan point of view i like it. We get a top prospect that is, from what i hear, a scoring machine and a 1st round pick which is late but its still a 1st. We may very well end up with 3 first round picks this year if the gonchar to Toronto deal goes down. The future of this team is looking pretty bright.

And so the firesale continues...

Spartak 02-27-2004 03:49 PM

Good move for the Wings.. who needs goaltending when you have firepower up front ?

rockzilla 02-27-2004 06:46 PM

I'm wondering who's gonna get Kolzig...

TheShadow 02-27-2004 08:24 PM

[Sulks in the background] Goddamnit, Burke!

But, sulking aside, I think that the Wings are quite the stacked team now.

FleaCircus 02-27-2004 08:43 PM

Ack! I was hoping the Avs would make a move for him.

Nikilidstrom 02-28-2004 07:43 AM

FINALLY!!! The news I've been waiting for all season. Tomas Fleischmann is no slouch, though, and probably would have played next season when a few players like Hull and Yzerman move on or retire. Lang is still a young guy, only 33, and he is a big dude, just what Detroit has been missing for a few seasons. The only real downside is that Detroit will be without a first round draft pick until like 2050 :) But luckily their scouts seem to be able to find the late round gems like Federov, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg. Ken Holland just went a long way in making up for the Hasek debacle.

Dr.Who 02-28-2004 07:46 AM

At last a good trade by the Caps. Lang is a good fit for the Wings, still have 3 years or so to his contract and will replace Yzerman next year if he decide to retire.

The Caps most look at Crosby for next year but that doesn't mean trading your best players for nothing. I'll wait and see for Gonchar cause that the biggest player on the block right now and rumors from Toronto and Boston are insane.

Nikilidstrom 02-28-2004 07:57 AM

From what I've heard, Gonchar would already be in Toronto, but they do not want to give up the young player that Washington wants, either Steen or Stajan. They are already giving up Carlo Colaiacovo, and it looks like they would be willing to throw in Antropov too. Toronto also wants to get Gonchar locked into a multi-year deal, so he doesn't go to arbitration this summer.

Leafs add Gonchar to their website roster?? Here's the article. i thought i was amusing.

Qazwsxedc 02-28-2004 10:36 AM

oh and i thought the leafs didn't want to add too many long term contracts cuz of a potential lock out..

FlyinHawaiin343 02-28-2004 05:27 PM

If i were in the leafs position i would do anything it takes to land Gonchar. They haven't won a cup for so long now and Gonchar could be the person to put them over the top. Cola/Steen/Stajan a 1st and maybe antropov would seem like a small price to pay for a shot at the Cup this season. Personally i would rather have a Cup than a good prospect because you can never be sure how that prospect will turn out.

Qazwsxedc 02-29-2004 04:16 PM

whoa.. cola/steen/stajan/antropov/1st round pick for Gonchar? ouch that sounds steep. i personally woulnd't make that deal. Leafs are old enough as it is. gotta keep some promising young talent around for the future.

are you serious 3 young talented players, a first rounder and a Russian who is terrible, maybe the terrible Russian and Aki Berg but holy shit man to trade 3 prospects players and a first rounder for an old defenceman albeit a good one is absolutely ridiculous, Antropov and Berg is all Gonchar is worth, keep all the youngsters jesus no use raping a talent pool when they don't need to. Why is Gonchar the player to put them over the top, I've said it before and I'll say it again hockey is a team sport and one player does not make a team, if it did payrolls would be much smaller. The Rangers are doing a great job with hardly any prospects and they have oh yeah they won't make the playoffs. If the Leafs give up these or any young talent for Gonchar it could rank up there as one of the worst trades like the Gary Leeman for Kordic deal

clifclav 03-01-2004 01:35 PM

All I know is the damn Caps better be hoisting some serious hardware in the next three years or this fans seat ain't going to be in one of their seats.

FleaCircus 03-01-2004 06:37 PM

Taken from The Denver Post

Quote:

The Avalanche has made serious inquiries to the Washington Capitals about trading for goalie Olaf Kolzig and defenseman Sergei Gonchar, a source familiar with the negotiations said Sunday.

The Capitals, the source said, have asked for Avalanche defenseman Derek Morris in return and another young prospect and/or draft choices. The NHL trading deadline is March 9.
I'm not sure what I think about this one. Kinda hate to see Morris go if the deal happens.

I didn't mean all 3 of them, i meant just one.

sorry but the way you typed it , it looked as if you were talking about all 3 players my mistake.

Now maybe Antropov and Berg for Gonchar but as for any prospects they should keep them he's not worth it. Hell they gave away Jackman for that piece of drift Berehowsky what was that about, did they think Drake would all of a sudden live up to his potential after floundering for god knows how many years.

Qazwsxedc 03-02-2004 06:28 PM

leech is the player the leafs should be going for. the price to get him won't be as high as gonchar and leech will definately help the leafs.

silent_jay 03-02-2004 07:45 PM

All they are doing is adding age (Leach was great when he was young still alright but age is taking it's toll) why give up anything to rent a player, when there are better defencemen on the team (Kaberle, Mcabe). I still think a package to any team Berehowsky, Berg, Pilar, and Antropov, for anyone these 4 players are terrible, it shows just how watered down the league has become when players of this calibre make it to the highest level of the sport.

ESPN News is reporting the Habs got Kovalev from the Rangers.

From Yahoo! Sports
Bruins nab their man: Gonchar headed to Boston

The Bruins have won the Sergei Gonchar sweepstakes, and the Capitals have continued their fire sale. The star defenseman was sent to Beantown on Wednesday for Shaone Morrisonn and first- and second-round selections in this year's draft. Gonchar is slated to become a restricted free agent after the season.

All that's left now is Kolzig.
