TO screws up, misses FA deadline, remains 49er
Full ESPN story
By missing the deadline, Owens is under contract to San Francisco through 2006 -- and the 49ers get an unexpected bonus in what's shaping up to be a difficult offseason. Now apparently San Fran can work with his contract a little and try to work out a trade...so let's start the trade talks now. Philly, Baltimore, and Atlanta have been the big names chasing him. What do you guys think about possible trades with them?! Dumb move by TO by the way. |

No no no...
Dumb move by TO's agent. I bet TO is personally flying over to him to give him a personal yelling-at. I mean, its not like TO never said that he was leaving SF... Good move for the Niners, they have some quality trade bait, if they work out Garcia's contract (or cut him) and now this situation.. they could keep a lot of their free agents... as well as maybe pick some up. Possible trades I was thinking.. maybe TO for either Dawkins or Taylor, Philly I think said they were only going to keep one, another good DB couldn't hurt the Niners. Baltimore could trade... um.. I'm not sure who, maybe a DB also.. although probably not McAllister. Atlanta.. umm.. pass ? Good move for the Niners, they could actually get some substance for this guy, instead of a measely 3rd round pick they would have gotten as compensation.

This is great for everyone but T.O. The Niners will actually get something for him and can control where he goes(I bet it's in the AFC) and whatever team gets him will not have to pay him as much as they would have as a free agent.
Don't you hate it when bad things happen to good people?

I think it's a little too early to figure out where a trade might come from. The teams that were interested before may not be willing to give up anything AND have to renegotiate that contract.
That said, the NY Jets may be a possibility. There was talk about the personnel who they were willing to trade for Champ Bailey. The 9ers will have a lot of needs and could get multiple players and a draft pick or so. Owens would fit the Jets offense very well. However, the best comment I heard was from a local sportscaster. He suggested that the 9ers would trade Owens to the team closest to Mars.

Baltimore won't trade for him. There's expected to be some nice receivers falling to the #52 pick this year. If they make any deal it'll be for a high first-rounder to pickup Roy Williams or someone like that.

being a niner fan i have to say I love this,
for the following reasons. 1) TO said he wanted to test the market as does every other star player seeking more money, I do not recal him saying he hated being a niner or anyone he played with (with the exception of Garcia after this past season) 2)If the niners decide that they can do without him there WILL BE some decent compensation given back if he is traded away instead of some junk or him just leaving. hopefully they can work out some kind of a deal in the upcoming seasons to have him retire a niner being 30 years old and at the top of his game i was worried they would lose such a talent and i do not feel that Lloyd will be the start TO is, or that Wilson and Streets are #1 potential. on a side note the 49ers cut Garrison Hearst (no suprise after the 5 year extension Barlow signed earlier in the month) and long time niner and pro-bowler Derrick Deese, I only hope the O-line which was in shambles at times last year has something ready to replace him.

Deese had maybe a couple of years left in him at the most, and they have a lot of 1st-2nd year linemen, to me that move was a a no-brainer.
Also Tai Streets is on the free agent market, so it would make sense if the Niners slashed a bit of payroll to keep at least one of its top 2 WRs. Keep in mind also, that the Niners are picking 16th (barring some draft day deals)... in a draft full of WRs, they could walk away with a decent one.. especially if certain teams pick QBs (Cards, Chargers) and linemen (Giants) like they are projected to.

Quick edit to my above post...apparently there is a rumor that Baltimore is offering Ed Hartwell and their second-round pick for Owens.

Same thing is going on here in Cleveland with Dennis Northcutt. And he said some very stupid things at the end of the season thinking he was a FA. Chances are the Browns will trade him also.
Have a feeling there are 2 agents without jobs right now.

According to ESPN, TO isn't blaming the agent, according to him its the 49ers fault for not informing them that they had to apply for free agency by the 21st... go figure

Now that is funny. Poor TO and Dennis thier teams are just so mean as to not inform them of THIER responsibilities. How could they blame thier agents men that work so very hard for them and take care of them.
Yep, just another athlete trying to not accept responsibility and admit he made a mistake.
