Say it ain't so Jamal, this could really hurt. I hope this is a mistake, but it sure doesn't look good.

ATLANTA (AP) - Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, who had the second-highest rushing total in NFL history last season, was indicted Wednesday on federal drug charges.

The Atlanta native is accused of conspiring to distribute cocaine in 2000, U.S. Attorney William S. Duffey announced at a news conference.

Beat me to it.

And I thought sports couldn't get an even worse image...

present_future 02-25-2004 02:37 PM

I guess we all know why he ran so well this past season.
"Jamal, just pretend like the Feds are chasing you down the field."

as reported by Draftsharks.com

Ravens RB Jamal
Lewis has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Atlanta on drug
conspiracy charges. Law enforcement officials allege that Lewis was
involved in a conspiracy to distribute at least 5 kilograms of
cocaine cut with other substances from June 23, 2000 to July 19,
2000.

He has been charged with one count of intent to distribute cocaine,
and a second count charges him with using a cell phone to carry out
the crime. Lewis' attorney maintains his innocence of both charges.
Lewis will surrender to authorities and appear in court later
tonight.

no linkie just a lil more detail on the situation

also does this play into his participation in the NFL's substance abuse program which I am pretty sure his 3rd offense in will lead up to a one year suspension, or is this just a charge against him and they would fine/suspend accordingly if found guilty when it was all said and done?

SAM821 02-25-2004 03:40 PM

Wow! is all i gotta say...

with so much shit happening in sports lately, i think the whip is gonna finally crack down on athletes... its happening in all sports!

well, on a lighter note, how much you wanna bet that Baltimore goes running back with first pick 2nd round.... might possibly even try to trade up

MontanaXVI 02-25-2004 03:46 PM

no need for a RB in Balt. they drafted Musa Smith out of Georgia last year.

djtestudo 02-25-2004 04:39 PM

Zero chance with that pick.

Jamal is innocent until proven guilty.

As for the suspension, this was prior to signing his contract with the Ravens, so that probably means it can't count for the SA policy.

filtherton 02-25-2004 07:02 PM

Maybe if the ravens paid him more he wouldn't have to deal cocaine. Its their fault. Really.

;) (duh)

At least he didn't kill anybody like a certain teammate of his. (Joking)

ReggErving 02-25-2004 10:07 PM

I think we need the facts before we judge him. The federal government has was of trumping up charges and using the media to their advantage, the man is innocent until proven guilty. They might be fishing for a big name on their war on drugs.

That's something I don't joke about.
Ray Lewis scares me.
Think about it: A murderer owes him a favor, a big favor.

We'll see what happens with Jamal. What a dumbass.

I agree. Let's wait for his day in court.

djtestudo 02-26-2004 08:43 AM

So everyone knows, here is what I know of the case from what has been reported.

He was contacted by an informent/dealer for the purpose of setting up a meeting between the informent/dealer and a friend of Jamal's. Jamal drove the friend to the meeting spot, where he sat in on the meeting where cocaine was discussed. Later, his friend was contacted on his own by the informent/dealer, who arranged a meeting between the two at a gas station to see the "drugs". That is where Jamal's connection ends from what has been reported.

Not exactly double murder, but not exactly encouraging, either.

Jesus Malverde 02-26-2004 04:51 PM

Damn. And the NFL was complaining about "Playmakers." What a fool.

More on this...he was taken off the substance-abuse watch list after the Pro Bowl this year after being clean two years. That means he goes back to the beginning, and the worst he can get is a first-offense warning from the NFL.

grayman 02-26-2004 10:16 PM

It is intriguing that they waited to indict him until after he had his best season ever.

I fucking hate the government sometimes.

crewsor 02-27-2004 01:05 PM

I find the timing suspicious also. I would hope it has nothing to do with this being an election year and someone seeking publicity to further their re-election campaign.

djtestudo 02-27-2004 01:25 PM

No...it's federal prosecuters. They aren't elected. It's just someone trying to put as many people as they can connect to the case on trial as possible.

Strange Famous 02-28-2004 10:43 AM

Why the hell does someone on an NFL salary need to deal cocaine????

crewsor 02-28-2004 11:43 AM

This happened before he was in the NFL and I don't think he is accused of dealing, just facilitating a deal.
