The game of Cricket farewells Steve Waugh.
India may have retained the Border-Gavaskar trophy and they got there in typical grinding fashion, but the day belonged to the retiring Australian captain Steve Waugh.
It was ever so close to a fairytale ending in such that for a two hour period before the tea break that maybe, just maybe,he was going to go out with the ending that he deserved. Chasing 443 runs (A record on any last day) for victory,Australia finished 6-357 with Steve Waugh caught a metre shy from the boundary on 80 runs. The end result was a series draw. It did not matter. He gave the crowd what they wanted. An inspirational innings that brought life into the fans that he acknowledged many times later in acceptance speeches. "The fans are what make the game",he said. How sweet it is. |
Although, for some reason, i never really liked him that much, moreso sorta apathetic really, it was a little sad to see him go. Also fitting that he had a good innings on the final day. It amazing though, one more session and they could've won?
