the si curse a letter form a colts fan

In an open letter to Sports Illustrated, Reggie Hayes asks why it decided to ruin our season.
By Reggie Hayes
of The News-Sentinel

Dear Sports Illustrated,

Thanks for nothing.

What have you got against Peyton Manning and the Colts? And why are you people doing this to us?

You've ruined the Colts' charmed season, you know. You've put Manning on the cover of this week's issue, labeled him "In Charge," and in doing so have all but guaranteed a loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night at the RCA Dome.

We Colts fans -- the 23 originals from 1984 and the 250,000 bandwagon ones picked up this year -- aren't happy. No sir, not at all.

You can try to brush aside the SI cover jinx as a myth, pointing out how many times Michael Jordan was on the cover, or Muhammad Ali, or Elle MacPherson, and say they never seemed to be jinxed. Whatever. Jordan has since been fired by the Wizards, Ali believes his cheesy mustache is a good look and MacPherson has slipped to at least 18th or 19th on the list of most beautiful women in the world.

No jinx?

Yeah, right.

Here is a partial list of some of the fallout we'll have to brace for now, with the Colts on your cover:

* Manning will throw at least four interceptions in the next two games.

* The Colts will be forced to travel to New England in the playoffs.

* Mike Vanderjagt will kick one wide left.

* Manning will kick Vanderjagt wide right.

* Marvin Harrison will have to use both hands to make a catch.

Of all the Colts, you've jinxed Manning the worst. Not only is he alone on the cover, but your lead article is headlined "Give Him the MVP." That ought to wrap things up for Tom Brady, don't you think?

Your cover/endorsement jinx needed only a couple of weeks to knock Connecticut out of the No.1 spot in men's college basketball. It took about what, 18 hours, between the Kansas City Chiefs making the cover and losing to the Bengals? David Robinson was on last week's cover. I checked into it. He's not even on the San Antonio Spurs' roster this week. Don't tell me there's no jinx.

Life was so much better for Colts fans when you were ignoring Peyton and the boys.

The only time the national media paid attention to the Colts this season was when Tony Dungy went back to play at Tampa Bay against the team that fired him. In fact, the Colts' national exposure, your cover story included, can be summed up with the question, "Can (Manning and/or Dungy) ever win the big one?"

It took 11 wins, the most dominant offense in a decade and no major motions in the Kobe Bryant case to get your editors to put the Colts on the cover.

What do we have, about 11 more minutes before things fall apart? Manning has probably been hit with a sore elbow, a bad back or a subpoena as I write this.

Denver running back Clinton Portis' knee and ankle injuries make the Colts a logical pick to beat the Broncos on Sunday, clinch the AFC South division title and guarantee at least one home playoff game.

Logic went out the window when your Manning cover hit the newsstand.

The only thing that can save the Colts from the jinx is this: My subscription is about to run out, so you attached an advertising renewal cover around the magazine. You know the one. It's heavy-stock paper with a renewal card at the bottom, and the offer of a free tote bag if I agree to pay you the low, low price of 99 cents an issue for the next 12 or 14 years.

Well. Within your phrases, "Subscriber Exclusive" and "Renew Now For Guaranteed Savings," I've found all the letters needed to spell "Denver Broncos."

Please tell me the subscription cover jacket is technically the real cover.

I sure hope so. If the subscription offer is jinxed and my free tote bag with the SI logo arrives with a defective zipper, I can always find other suitcases for my trip to Houston to watch the Colts win the Super Bowl.

Sincerely,

A Colts Fan

P.S. I believe the New England Patriots would make a fine cover story next week.

I think I'm going to send a large bribe in the direction of SI so they keep Indy on the cover until they lose in the playoffs (so, only enough for two weeks, including next week )

Looks like the curse still works. The Colts didn't have anything working for them last night.
