Same thing as people in Calgary hate Edmonton so much. Same goes for when people in Montreal hated Quebec City before they moved to Colorado. Just a matter of inter-provinical rivality. Pretty common in CFL too. Ti-Cat/Argo, Stampeder/Eskimo, Roughrider/Blue Bomber

Uh... It's not just Ottawa. Basically everyone hates the Leafs. They play dirty hockey and the refs let them get away with it. All the hits, knees [Marchment], hissy fits, and crosschecks in the face [Doug Weight ] that they get away with are degrading hockey. They don't actually play anymore, just hit other teams' players.

What's that? The refs didn't make a call on a Maple Leaf player? DEAR GOD! IT'S A CONSPIRACY!

The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!" |

Ok, since when did any other NHL team play nicely? Did you expect to play minor league all your life and then all of sudden you get thrown in the major league and be a niceie at it? I didn't think so.
Toronto's doing well simply because they're throwing more hits than they did at the beginning of the year. I think everybody just hates the Leafs cuz Toronto beat their team. I don't care bout the Leafs, bout time couple of Canadian team beat the shit outta Americans and become the best. Vancouver and Toronto is doing that right now. Calgary and Ottawa seems to be on their way. Montreal and Edmonton...ah well, god knows what happened to them...

Playoff Rivalries. TO knocked out Ottawa twice from the playoffs I think.
Hence why I hate Minnesota Wild so much.... grrr.... bitter from the Canucks series last year. Respect Richard Park #18 on the Wild though. WOO KOREAN! heheh

Everybody outside of Toronto, around southern Ontario, hates the Leafs the same way people from small towns hate people from Toronto. I don't think the Leafs are any worse or better than any other team. It's not like the have a repuation for playing dirty. It's just people hating Toronto because they think it's the center of Canada. Torontonians are not that egotistical at all, they just love their city, much like everyone else likes their own.

I've never cared for the leafs. I lived in the West. Plus I lived near Calgary and I hated Calgary, I was glad when Edmonton would come down and destroy Calgary. The same pretty much goes for the CFL as it was said before.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that when the Sens weren't around the Buds were ramed down the thoughts of everyone who was unfortunate enough to live in ON at the time.
The Leafs have always bitched and moaned about the ref's and I for one would really like to see Tucker get smoked so hard that he can't skate off the ice. Ever notice that Domi, wont go up against Geroge L from Edmonton ? The leafs are great at sticking other teams players and then run to the first camera and snivel about how they were hard done by in any game. The goons go against guys who don't fight and the sniper runs and hides as soon as he's hit. I hate the leafs and would love to see them get run right over by any team. Anyone from Long Island listening ? |

not I, hey shodowz what is contact for then should all players put eggs in their pockets and the players who don't break them get a bonus. next people are going to tell me that fighting is bad for the game, and there should be no blueline and maybe even no contact at all. so they hit the other team boo hooo its hockey suck it up. i understand rivalry i played the game for 21 years of my life i was just curious if maybe there was a jealousy of all the cups the leafs have won how many does Ottawa have (i actualy don't know)

Before we had an NHL franchise, Ottawa was composed mostly of Leaf fans and Habs fans. There are still plenty of both, but Montreal fans are a fickle bunch, and most of them were more than happy to switch their colours once Ottawa started getting some wins. I was a Nordiques fan myself, I was pretty disappointed that they won a cup the first year they were moved to Colorado, but that's another story. There are still tons of Toronto fans around here, and the rivalry is pretty friendly (among the fans, that is).
Among the players, it's a different thing. Seems the Leafs are always eager to gloat when they win, and are quick to make excuses when they lose. And it's not just against Ottawa either. Another interesting thing is that Toronto was moved to the Eastern Conference for the specific reason that they would be able to play Ottawa more than once or twice a year. The league wanted the two teams to build a rivalry. It seems to have worked, Ottawa vs. Toronto games are always the first to sell out, and are always entertaining to watch. |

I don't know about the TO Ottawa games being the first to sell. Have you ever tried to get tickets at Joe Louis Arena (Detroit for those half wits) Joe Louis is sold out everytime no matter whos there. And when a rival comes and play it practically impossible to get tickets even from scalpers.

I would hazard a guess that a vast majority of people who live outside of Toronto hate anything to do with Toronto - including the Maple Leafs. I live in Toronto now, but spent most of my life living in various cities across Canada. If there's anything that this great country has in common, it's beer, hockey, and a hatred of anything Toronto.

Maybe cause Ottawa has a team that plays in the same division as Toronto, but that's just a guess.

Sorry to bring an old thread back from the dead, but the Sens and Leafs are playing tomorrow night. Ottawa needs this win like I need a harem of 19 year old virgins, that is to say, very, very badly.
How many penalty minutes are we all expecting for this game? My bet's on 75. |
