Yankees Get Vazquez for Johnson+

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1678044

as a sox fan Vazquez is the only pitcher i might have rather had than Schilling, but it's close. I also want Vazquez to pitch this season and leave. The Sox gave up some pretty good prospects, but not until they signed an ace (albeit old) for at least 3 more years. They Yanks just gave up something close to equal in prospects for a pitcher that might only be with them for one year. That said I guess there is little chance that yanks wont be able to throw enough money at him to keep him around. of course if i want to think about it that way, they could have just waited a year to throw the money at him and keep Johnson.

oh well. Good pitching beats good hitting, so I suppose this is a good deal. Johnson really did scare me more than any other yankee hitter at the plate this year.

Johnson will never hit for a lot of power. He also only plays about 100 games a year. Giambi also bats better while playing the field, and is not that bad of a first baseman. He has a bad arm, but how often does your first baseman have to make a tough throw.

Curt or Vasquez? No question it is Vasquez. He is ten years younger, and the Yanks will resign him.

We will also get Palmeiro or some other decent first baseman to DH (assuming they don't sign Lofton and have Bernie DH).

Ah, the arrogance of the Yankee fans.

Based on how things really work in baseball, I'm guessing that neither the BoSox nor the Skankees will be the champs next year. Granted, one of the two teams will be in the World Series but will lose to either the Brewers or Pirates.

Baseball is turning into the ncie guy finishes first league. Don't believe me? Look at the last three WS champions: Dbacks, Angels, and Marlins.

Vasquez might nut up in the bright lights/big city atmosphere

Jeff Weaver part 2?

Oh, and the deal for people who didn't want to click the link:

To Yankees:
Javier Vazquez

To Expos:
Nick Johnson
Juan Rivera
Randy Choate

BigBlueWrecking 12-04-2003 02:21 PM

I am not trying to be arrogant, and nowhere did I say the rest of the league should concede the WS championship.

Nice guys? The Angels, Marlins, and DBAcks had one good year and then they basically sell off their team for parts. I think that is worse than consistently bringing in talent like the Yankees, Red Sox, Braves or some other teams do.

Vasquez may bomb, Schilling's arm may fall off, but at least these teams are trying to win. You can't say that about 80% of the MLB teams.

And that is what matters the most.

Talking about weaver. There has been rumors that LA will trade Kevin Brown for Weaver.... I'd do that trade in a second.

How did Soriano go from being one of the top players in all of baseball to being more than expendable?

When he decided that defense and plate disipline were for losers.

I like the tit-for-tat game the Red Sox and Yankees are playing. what's next A-Rod goes to Beantown???

Very true. Those no pressure games in front of 5,000 Expos fans might not prepare him mentally for pitching in meaningful games.

BigBlueWrecking 12-05-2003 08:52 AM

Soriano regressed last year, but I still think he is someone the Yankees should keep. If Rivera had saved Game 7 of the Arizona series, Soriano would have been the MVP as a rookie (not trying to blame Rivera because Torre called the infield in and that cost them the game. I agree with the Torre call though)

A-Rod to Boston might actually go down, but the problem is that they would have to give up Manny (while still paying some of his salary) and Nomar. Those are two big players to get one. Granted, they would get something for Nomar going to (Angels most likely, but maybe the Dodgers) although I am not sure how much payroll they could add.

Weaver for Brown is pretty much dead. They would have to add Boone and cash to the deal and take Brown and Beltran back. I think they are using it as a plot to show Pettite there are other optiuons. I would be very surprised to see that trade.

Vasquez will be fine in NYC, in my opinion. He is a stud. He pitches a ton of innings and has good stuff. Weaver was much less proven, and I am still not ready to write him off. Although his postseason last year made me pretty close to writing him off.

Johnson is a good pick for the Expos, it will leave Wilkerson in is natural left field.

It's a trade that is money-saving for the Expos. Without Vasquez & Tatis who is not returning, they will probably make a better offer to Guerrero. I like Armas Jr. to come back healthy and Orlando Hernandez to back up Livan next year. Not that they can replace Vasquez easily, but with a little bit of luck, you never know!

I'm so glad to see Johnson gone. I always hated him and now I don't have to see him hit against my beloved Sox anymore.

wrongfullyaccuzd 12-06-2003 12:14 PM

Johnson was turning into a force at the plate and bailed the Yankees a couple times last year. I will be sad to see him leave. However, as someone said, good pitching does beat good hitting. And the Yanks need Vasquez to stay (ahead of or up with, depending on your opinion) the Red Sox.
