Sosa ejected tonight.. Cork found in his bat.

Well, doesn't this make you wonder.

About 5 mins ago this story came across the ESPN.com live desktop wire I have on my machine.

Sammy Sosa was ejected tonight when a broken bat, of Sosa's was examined by an umpire, and cork was found in the bat. Sammy was ejected and the Cubbies lost the run on the board. All base runners returned.

I'm a Cubs fan, if this turns out to be true, this absolutley disgusts me.

RAMONES!!! 06-03-2003 06:27 PM

shit...come on sammy, at least its good news for the DEVIL RAYS!!!

JoeyB 06-03-2003 06:38 PM

It's been pretty quiet so far this year with Sammy. Just when we stopped hearing about the rumors of him being juiced...his bat provides a few surprises.

This will not go away quietly.

The_Dude 06-03-2003 06:44 PM

i'm sure it was an accident

BigBlueWrecking 06-03-2003 07:13 PM

yeah...accident...right

eyeronic 06-03-2003 07:22 PM

I am absolutely heartbroken. I have never been so disappointed by a sports related thing in my life. I loved Sammy. I am very angry. I can only hope that it's a set up or something.

JoeyB 06-03-2003 07:24 PM

Sosa is claiming that he knew the bat was corked, but had no intention of using it in a game.

The corking--on purpose.

Using it in a game--accidental.

Interesting.

hdvrod1 06-03-2003 07:40 PM

Shocking, its really sad that it happened

BigBlueWrecking 06-03-2003 08:10 PM

I am not sure what to believe. You would have to be a complete moron to use a corked bat these days. So many bats are broken every game. Even if he uses one during batting practice and picked this up by accident, how do we know he hasn't done it a million times before. We know it was his bat, he admitted it. He admitted to having corked bat in his bag almost every game (although he says he does not use them except for batting practice). I am just confused and sort of venting. This is very damaging and now I really wonder about steroid use and things like that.

spasblitz 06-03-2003 08:10 PM

I watched the post game interview with Sammy. All i know is that poor bastard had "scared to death" written all over his face. He's in a world of shit fer sure !

shotofwine 06-03-2003 08:41 PM

I'm not going to dislike him until I see what the other bats turn up. He claimed this bat was for for ooooohing fans during bp. How you get that mixed up with your regular bats is beyond me, seems you would mark it or something. All his other bats were confiscated so we'll have to wait and see if he's telling the truth.

KeyserSoze 06-03-2003 10:45 PM

Well the only true way to see if he has been using a corked bat all this time is to see how he hits for the next month or so. I guarantee they will keep a close eye on his bats.

I truly hope this was a mistake but if it was not and Sammy has been corkin it for awhile now................just sad........fuckin sad:(

I didn't se it, but from what I understand it was marked in fact. I'm told ESPN showed a "C" on the head of the bat that could be seen in one of the camera shots.

Honestly, I don't think he's lying. I know it's real tempting to give in to that strange human tendancy to see the suffering of others, but look at it this way:

1) This is Sammy Sosa. Why do fans come to see batting practice? They want to see some big hits - especially from people like Sammy. So, why not give it to them - use a corked bat in BP, no harm there.

2) If what I hear about the C is true, then that's a pretty obvious defense that he is telling the truth.

3) If he had realized that he was using a corked bat in game, he wouldn't have simply walked right over it on his way back to the dugout - he would have picked it up and tried to get it before someone else did.

4) As I read someone say somewhere else, Sammy has broken MANY bats in the past - and never has one been found to be corked. If this was something he did regularly, he most likely would have been caught by now.

I am going to reserve my opinion until the OTHER bats he had are opened up and examined. If they are free of cork, I'll believe him.

Remember in 1994 with Albert Belle? White Sox order a suspicious bat taken to the umpires room, has the name Albert Belle right on it. Knowing he's screwed, the Indians send in a relief pitcher into the locked umpires room by way of the ceiling, with a replacement bat. The funniest thing is that its not even an Albert Belle model, cause ALL of his bats he has with him are corked. So when the umpires hit their room after the game, some other schmucks bat is there.

So, thats history, if it repeats itself, and all of Sammy's bats (or most) are corked, then I won't believe him. But if its just one or two, I will. We'll see.

Glad to know the benefit of the doubt is still alive and well in some people. Seems everyone's eager to place guilt these days.

BigBlueWrecking 06-04-2003 06:10 AM

I am not eager to place guilt...he is fucking guilty. Mistake or not, he used a corked bat in a game. How we do know he has not "accidentally" picked up a corked bat before.

I am not saying he purposely cheats all of the time, but this could be a ready made excuse for if he did get caught.

Either way, he is guilty for using a corked bat...so don't give me this benefit of the doubt crap. We saw the bat in his hand, we saw him swing it, and we saw cork fly out of it.

Artermis 06-04-2003 08:08 AM

Corked bat or juiced players...which is the bigger problem?

Sure he will get his 10 games and if they find any more bats with cork in them...it could be a lot longer but why are they making such a big deal out of this when you have all these players, saying 50% of the MLB rosters are using steroids but that is not as big a deal to the union or to the commish.

Until they do something to actually clean up the game I LAFF at any attempts to punish people for "cheating".

I clearly think juicing is a much bigger problem. I played baseball in college. I was a starting pitcher and we never actually juiced, but they would give us all kinds of pills. My arm would hurt and they would shoot me up with something to help with the pain. Now my shoulder is permanently F'd up. That is a problem with all of sports.

BulletBob 06-04-2003 02:23 PM

Considering how probably 75% of major leaguers have used corked bats over the course of their career, I think this is all pretty stupid. Some get caught, most don't. All these self righteous people who think this is some freak occurance need to wake up.

BigBlueWrecking 06-04-2003 03:07 PM

I think that is a VAST overstatement there BB. 75% used corked bats? No way. There have even been studies done that show it does nothing for the distance of a ball. It is still cheating though.

They looked at all of his other bats, and they were clean. I still don't buy the argument that it was a mistake and he didn't know. Bats are protected by ball players and you could tell right away what weight the bat was.

gov135 06-04-2003 03:55 PM

Looks like MLB declared Sosa's other 76 bats were all clean....
looks like it could have just been an honest mistake.

I believe Sosa 100% now. If you were using corked bats for games, you'd have more than one ready to go.

Yes, it was a bit of an overstatement. I'm wondering if you watched baseball tonight last night. Did you see the video of Buck Showalter showing how to cork a bat? It removed about one ounce of weight from the bat. That is not a noticeable difference when you reach in the bat rack and grab a bat. I do believe it was an honest mistake by him but I'm willing to bet it's not the first time he's hit with one in a game.

sammy sosa

is it just me or is sammy sosa nothing more than a cry baby millionare? He bitched about his suspension of seven games, called it "racism", when FACT, Chris Sabo of the Reds got caught with a corked bat and got a eight game suspension, and a fine. Sosa got no fine, so where is racism? Sabo didnt cry about it, so shut your mouth Sosa. Go Marlins!!! Sorry, i am just bored and that was on my mind.
