Dan Snyder Passes

ESPN reports that Dan Snyder has just passed from his injuries received in a car accident received last Monday (Dany Heatley was driving.) (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=1631396)

Very sad to see someone pass at such a very young age.

The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!"

not to mention this could very well ruin Heatleys life. I wouldn't feel too bad about that fact if he was drunk and crashed the car, but a large number of us have just been speeding and came out unscathed. Life is funny that way, and its just a damn shame for Snyder and Heatley.

Yeah, I would definitely agree it is a disaster all the way around. This reminds me a lot of the Pelle Lindbergh tradegy back in the early 80's.

I would be surprised if Heatley ever comes back. And, if he does, I seriously doubt he'll be in Atlanta. I'd also be surprised too if Heatley drives again.

By the way, was Heatley drunk?

Will Heatley Mentally Recover?

Lots of stories. But so easily answered.

Heatley will probably never legally drive again, he'll be lucky to play in the NHL again, he might be lucky not to get life in jail.

I wonder what EA Sports will do with their marketing campaign, as Heatley is their coverboy for NHL 2004. I haven't seen a TV commercial for it since the accident.

This whole thing sucks ass.

Heatly will never mentally recover from this and if he ever does play hockey again, He won't be the player that he was.

I have mixed feelings about this.

1. Alot of people speed on a daily basis and not really think twice about it. If alcohol was not a factor, It was simply an accident that could have happened to anybody.

2. If Dan Heatly was driving under the influence, Then he deserves the punishment he gets.

It still bothers me that 2 canadian hockey players were just doing what any young guys do in thier fast car...I really hope that alcohol is not a factor and that heatly does not have the fans, teammates and the family's blaming him.

I can't even imagine what he must be going through.

It's sad that such a young player died the way he did.

Very sad news. Hope the best for Snyder's familly and Heatley.

Heatley is out at least for the year. Don't know if he gonna play again. Hope so cause the future was bright for him.

Snyder is just a victim of life, to show you just how quick things can turn and go wrong. R.I.P. Dan.

Too bad it wasn't the OTHER Dan Snyder...

But seriously, a very sad day in the world of sports. Shades of the boating accident in spring training 1992 with the three Indians players.

*still going to hell for my first comment*

Even if he wasn't drunk, what the hell was he doing speeding in bad conditions ?

If he avoids jail (somehow) he will still be out for the season, and I'm not sure many teams would want to play him, I'm sure other players will have mixed emotions.

Stupid kid, what a complete waste of talent, not to mention a human life.

80mph and the car is split into two. Damn Ferrari's are fragile. If he was driving a Volvo everyone would be safe.

But that aside, rich young athletes + expensive Italian sports car + adrenaline + inexperienced driving skills in a Ferrari (hey, he wasn't a F1 driver)= bad results

I am fairly sure that the ferrari he drove was designed to break apart like that. Ideally in a crash you want parts to break off so that the energy of the crash is dissapated away from the driver. But realistically there is no car on the road today in which you could guarantee you would not die in an 80 mph crash.

I highly doubt that alcohol was a factor in this. Apparently, from what I can tell, they got in the car immediately after a team thing where they met fans and whatnot. Now, I highly doubt they were drunk while mingling with fans. If that was the case, they'd have been benched, so they wouldn't want to do that. I also doubt they got boozed up on the way to the car. If they got boozed up IN the car, there'd have been bottles and whatnot left in the car what could have been found at the scene. I think that it just is what it is, a complete tragedy caused by a little arrogance in a fast car. When people have fast cars, they get arrogant. It's just a fact of life. It really is a damn shame though. Heatley was such a great player... I doubt that if he ever DOES play again, that he'll ever play at nearly the same level he once did. As for Snyder... well, it's always a shame to see someone die at that kind of age. Snyder seemed to have a lot of potential too. I saw him live against the Islanders everal times, and he worked his ass off constantly. He was always fighting, always straining himself, and it seemed to pay off (as he made the Thrashers undrafted, a rare accomplishment in today's NHL).

Hockey has such a terrible history with car accidents too... Herb Brooks, Steve Chiasson, Tim Horton, Pelle Lindberg, Craig McTavish... I guess it's just the speed inherent in the game that carries over to off-ice activities. But I don't know for sure.

It's really a terrible tragedy.
