Coach says he'd support shcolarship release

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State is ready to cut ties with Maurice Clarett if the star running back asks to transfer to another school, Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.

Tressel's comment came just before prosecutors charged Clarett with lying about items that were stolen from him out of a car.

Tressel said he does not anticipate Clarett returning to the team this season. When asked if he would recommend Clarett be released from his scholarship if the request was made, Tressel said, "my recommendation would be yes."

On Monday, Cleveland television station WJW reported that the university has finished its investigation into Clarett and has uncovered evidence that Clarett received "extra benefits worth thousands of dollars." WJW also reported that Ohio State would not seek reinstatement for him.

Alan C. Milstein, the Clarett family attorney, said he wasn't surprised by Tressel's comments or the misdemeanor charge.

"Nothing Ohio State does surprises me," he said. "I don't think the family recognizes what Ohio State's actions and motivations are either."

Milstein declined to comment on whether Clarett would consider transferring.

Asked if Clarett had played his final game for the Buckeyes, Milstein said, "I think that's up to Ohio State."

Prosecutors and Ohio State University police filed a misdemeanor falsification charge against him in Franklin County Municipal Court, city attorney spokesman Scott Varner said.

Clarett has already been suspended indefinitely from the team, and probably will not play for the Buckeyes this season. He is also being investigated by the NCAA.

Clarett acknowledged earlier this summer that he filed an exaggerated theft report after his car was broken into in April. The car, a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, was borrowed from a local dealer.

The NCAA started looking into the report after Clarett stated he had lost more than $10,000 in items in the theft.

Clarett set Ohio State freshman records last season with 1,237 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, including the winning score in the Buckeyes' double-overtime victory over Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.

The university does not have a set punishment for athletes charged with misdemeanors, Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger said Tuesday. The charge will not factor into the length of a suspension the university will recommend to the NCAA, he said.

Clarett's mother, Michelle, did not return a phone message seeking comment on the charge. Former NFL star tailback Jim Brown, a family adviser, said he wasn't aware of the charge and declined comment on it or Tressel's statement.

Clarett is a dumbass. What the fuck was he thinking. He basically threw away his college career because he's a kid who always did whatever the hell he wanted and got away with it because he's a great athlete and has been getting special treatment his entire life. Now he'll be lucky if he didn't fuck up his pro career.

I dont think OSU wants clarrett to play at all.

seems like they're doing everything possible to keep him off the field.

I agree, but I actually respect that they don't want a cheater in their program.

The only thing that makes me mad is I saw almost all of his High School games his Junior and Senior years and I really thought he had his shit together, but he obviously doesn't.

and he gets charged with misdemeanor!

i dont think things can go anymore wrong for him.

if convicted, he'll be spending time in jail for up to 6 months instead of playin football. (maybe he can still play football in jail )

Ohio State is afraid (and rightfully so) that if he even practices with the team and is found to be inelligible that the team will face some sort of sanctions. Which is why they won't let him touch the field.

But you can't blame Ohio State. Every other athlete played by the rules, they shouldn't suffer cause Maurice thinks so much of himself he feels he's above the rules.

And go watch Fergusen (he's at least got his head on straight)play for Harding this year, Sixate. He's even better then Clarett and I think this Harding team is even better than the one last year. I've got tickets for the Harding/Massilon game at Massilon this year, and hope to make a few more before that match-up.

Maurice Clarett, the next Lawrence Phillips? In three years, he'll either be up NFL MVP or getting cut from his second AF2 team. Which one will depend on whether he gets his head out of his ass.

I keep hearing about how good that kid is, but I haven't seen him play. I'd like to make it to a few games to check him out. Too bad I lost my connection for free tickets. It's not like they're expensive, but free anything is great.

Whoa, whoa, calm down. Clarett will not be at MVP level in 3 years, if at all for that matter. Priest Holmes, Ricky Williams, Clinton Portis, all are better than Clarett will be in 3 years. If they're too old, Anthony Davis, Darren Sproles, Willis McGahee and Frank Gore will probably be better.

Better with him, but the team doesn't need someone that will totally disregard the rules. Tressel has shown he's a class act, and won't stand for this type of crap. Go bucks!

I think everything that has happened to the kid has been blown way out of the porportion. The NCAA was on a witch hunt and did what they always do. The victim is Clarett, because when you REALLY look at what the kid did it was that big of a deal. He didn't hurt anyone, he did rape a woman, he did do anything that should cause this kind of punishment.

I think that even Clarett does manage to get hooked up with another school or the NFL, he'll end up being as important as Lawerence Phillips was. Although, I do think he'd be a welcome addition to the "Playmakers" cast.
