Who is fired first?

Let's overreact after week #1

The Dolphins, Eagles, Rams and Raiders all enjoyed success during the last 5 seasons.

They all came into this season with high expectations.

They all lost in week one.

Granted, it's only one loss and all but Miami lost to quality teams (sorry Texans fans, I'm not convinced yet)...but looking ahead to later this off-season, which coach gets fired first?

Dave Wannstedt is the easy pick, but I think Bill Callahan will get axed first. Al Davis is notoriously impatient and I think that the Raiders will have a tough time repeating in the AFC. Miami and Philly will soon tire of the playoff failure and both coaches could be on the hotseat. I can't stand Mike Martz, so that guarantees that he'll never leave.

RoadRage 09-08-2003 08:53 PM

I think Martz's will be first on the firing line, especially if Bulger repeats what he did last year (5-1 as a starter) and he is still getting benched for Warner (2-8).

Wannstadt in Miami has to do something better than almost make the playoffs, or he'll be elsewhere next year.

Those are the two whom I believe are under the most pressure at this point.

Mitzkrieg 09-08-2003 11:41 PM

just a little correction, Bulger was 6-1 as a starter last year. and warner was 0-6. the second string QB started the other 3 games, can't remember his name at the moment. and i dunno about martz being fired. last season the rams were plagued with injuries. not much you can do there. and that loss on sunday wasn't necessarily his fault. Warner got a concussion and played messed up. it sorta helped him fumble all those times, heh. warner is always stubborn about playin.

Martz has named Bulger as his starter for this week. His hotseat just got a bit cooler.

Kurant 09-09-2003 05:41 AM

He's only the starter because Warner has a mild-strong concussion. Otherwise, you'd see yet another disaster this week.

I never was on the Warner bandwagon, I really personally don't care for him. The less he plays it seems, the better off the Rams are.

Kurant 09-09-2003 05:43 AM

Oh, yeah. And Griese will get a chance to start before they fire Wannstadt. I dunno why he doesn't start anyway...

Dano069 09-09-2003 06:25 AM

Isn't Griese hurt?

grayman 09-09-2003 06:28 AM

I personally think that Jauron will be fired first, after the Bears fail to win 6 games. The only reason that he still has a job is because of that fluke season when they made the play-offs. As much as I would like to see Martz get fired, I don't see it happening with Georgia as the owner. If it was me, it would take a Super Bowl win this season to save his job.

You're right, they certainly were horrible during his 2 MVP seasons. The problem with the Rams is Mike Martz and his insane play calling. When you throw the ball 60 times and run it 10, your QB is going to get hit and he is going to throw picks. The defense knows that Martz isn't going to run it, even with Faulk in the backfield (see their last Super Bowl appearance.) The fumbles were because of the concussion, and someone should have picked up on it and taken him out. It is fashionable right now to pick on Warner, because they can create a QB controversy. What everyone forgets about is that he still threw for 342 yards and a TD. The pick was caused by his WR falling down. Many other elite QB's had worse days and no one is calling for their heads.
Tom Brady: 48.3% completions 123 yards 4 INT 0 TD 20.4 QB rating
Peyton Manning: 62.8% comp. 211 yards 2 INT 0 TD 55.5 QB rating
Kurt Warner: 63.0 % comp. 342 yards 1 TD 1 INT 79.4 QB rating
Donovan McNabb: 52.8% comp. 148 yards 0 TD 1 INT 51.6 QB rating

I don't see Jauron righting the ship. He has nothing to work with. Miami and St. Louis have the talent to make the playoffs just yet - or make a run at them. If Wannstedt and Martz fail to make the playoffs - they are gone before the first weekend of the playoffs.

But I think hapless Chicago may go 0-5 and take Jauron with them. He goes first.

The_Dude 09-09-2003 08:07 AM

I'll cast my vote for mike martz if he starts warner again and warner flops.

also, he made a lot of bad calls in their loss to NYG

monkeydriven 09-09-2003 08:21 AM

Martz

lions20 09-09-2003 08:27 AM

Aside from the 5 teams listed i think Dick Jauron will be fired first.

Brewmaniac 09-09-2003 08:54 AM

Jauron first! He has nobody to work with.

Reddevil63 09-09-2003 03:35 PM

I think Martz and Callahan are both screwed if their teams dont win a Super Bowl this year.

BigGov 09-09-2003 04:28 PM

Reid will not be fired anytime soon. He and Jim Johnson built the Eagles from a laughing stock to a Super Bowl contender out of 12 players, McNabb and a defense. Their opponents most weeks have a better team overall, yet the Eagles have managed to pull it out. Losing to the world champs in week one isn't anything to be that ashamed of, they will just treat it as another learning experience (a big one, especially considering how many changes the defense has gone through with free agency and injuries).

Martz will definately be fired after this season, so it will be a tie between him and whoever else is fired. Need a reason? I'll give you nine, because that's now many times Marshall carried the ball. I don't care who you are or how much of an offensive genius you are, if you want to win a football game, you put at the top of your list "Give Marshall the ball 30 times".

Jauron will also be fired, but he's being set-up by the crappy management in Chicago so when he's fired they can hire some other guy they want, who will suck even more because the team will be without many key players.

Dr.Who 09-09-2003 05:20 PM

I agree that Chicago is going nowhere, that's not even funny. But Martz got to go. I watch the game sunday and even if I hate the Rams, the 4 and 12 call at the end, among other stupid calls, was killer one for the Rams. He did nothing good with this team and after the season will be out, looking elsewhere for a job.

jfranco13 09-09-2003 05:59 PM

I think Jauron is the first to go. Da management of Da Bears does not want to admit that they've made a mess, so they'll sacrifice Juaron.

How about Billick though? Going with a rookie QB? If Boller doesn't shape up, The Genius could feel some heat on his ass. He won't be the first to go, but he might be one of them.

JoeyB 09-09-2003 06:07 PM

I agree with everyone's assessment of Jauron and Billick, however I don't think either team had the expectation of success. The Bears are starting Kordell Stewart--with not much support and the Ravens have a rookie QB. Granted, their defense is tough, but I don't think most people saw either team as a Super Bowl contender.

I think Marc Bulger will make the Rams decision easy. Bulger will do well and Warner won't have a chance to get back into the starting lineup.

What does Martz have against Marshall Faulk??? Did he learn NOTHING from the Super Bowl loss to the Patriots?

lions20 09-10-2003 06:52 AM

I do not think Billick's job is in jepopardy. The Ravens are still in a rebuilding process.

Martz, he's not going with the hot hand which is Bulger (well, we'll see, cuz it's a new year).

stldickie 09-10-2003 01:31 PM

Callahan is probably soon to be history.
I'm afraid the good ole Stl is stuck with mikey for another year or two.

JoeyB 09-15-2003 05:09 PM

Now with week #2 in the books.....whose hot seat got a little hotter???

I don't think Callahan is terribly safe after barely beating the Bengals. Wannstedt will probably survive, but if the Eagles don't turn it around, I don't see Andy Reid having a retirement party in the city of brotherly love.

JoeyB 09-22-2003 07:26 PM

I'm repeating my prediction of a Bill Callahan firing.....and now, I'm requesting it.

This team should be 0-3. The Raiders were incredibly lucky to beat the Bengals.
