Carmelo Anthony to enter NBA draft

Quote:
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Syracuse freshman Carmelo Anthony, who led the Orangemen to their first national championship, will make himself eligible for the NBA draft.

Anthony said Thursday he will forgo his final three years at Syracuse to play in the NBA.

Anthony delayed making the decision until after the season, preferring to focus on winning the national title.

He led the Orangemen in scoring, averaging 22 points, and broke Lawrence Moten's freshman scoring record for points and Derrick Coleman's freshman rebounding mark.

Anthony had a career-best 33 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in Syracuse's victory over Texas in the national semifinals in New Orleans earlier this month. He scored 20 points as Syracuse beat Kansas in the title game and was named Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four -- just the third freshman to earn that honor.

"I'm here in front of you today to announce that I will not be coming back next year,'' Anthony said at a news conference. ``I will be moving on, moving on to the pros.''

Anthony said he reached his decision after talking with his mother and to coach Jim Boeheim.

"It was a tough decision for me to make,'' said Anthony, who began crying as he spoke.

Boeheim agreed with Anthony's decision and said his star player is ready for the next level.

"This is a very happy day for Syracuse basketball, and a sad one, too,'' Boeheim said. "The guy sitting here has done more for Syracuse basketball than any player we've ever recruited or that's ever played here. To lead his team to a national championship as a freshman is truly a historic moment in college basketball. I'm very thankful that he was here with us.''

The NBA draft is scheduled for June 26. The NBA's deadline for underclassmen to make themselves eligible for the draft is May 12. Anthony is expected to be a lottery pick. The draft lottery will held May 22.

Anthony is the first Syracuse underclassman to declare early for the NBA since Billy Owens opted not to return for his senior season in 1991. Owens was the No. 3 pick that year. All-America guard Pearl Washington jumped to the NBA after his junior season in 1986 and was the No. 13 pick.

Kind of a shame to see IMO, as I like college basketball a lot more than NBA. I just find it more exciting and fun to follow.

What are your thoughts on his decision to leave college early?

He's got nothing left to prove at college, so why not go get his millions now!!

This is a classic example as to why there will never be another dynasty in college hoops!!! I would be shocked if a school ever won more than 2 in a row again.

you still have teams out there like Duke, or Kentucky and now maybe Carolina that graduate players... i can still see teams like that win a few championships.... Who is going to be a better pro, Anthony or LeBron?.... i rooting for Anthony just becuase he seems like a nicer guy than Big Head Lebron

Smart move. He's one of the guys that should leave early. He's gonna be a good one.

It was a good move by him.
I was expecting him to be at least one more year at Syracuse, but hey, he can compete against the top candidates in the NBA draft.

The reason he lefted, millions and millions of them.

Hope he doesn't become the next Jay Williams, hyped beyond belief, but was a disappointment in the NBA.

As a Raptors fan, I hope they get a top 3 pick, and get Darko Milicic.

I think hes got the body to be great. But lets not forget he has the drive too. Alot of times I think these guys get the cash and forget to show up at practice.

He had to go. Had nothing left to prove. Did what few people could ever imagine doing. He *should* be #1 in the draft, as I think he's more developed than Lebron, but he won't go any further than #3. He's gonna be good in the NBA.

If I'm doing the picking, I'd seriously consider pickng him ahead of Lebron. I think alot can be said about the fact that Carmelo dominated against much better competition. I'm not saying he's better, but I do think he will have an easier transition to the NBA.

Anthony is what is wrong with college sports. If I read another article about how much he liked college I am going to puke. This idiot did not have a 2.0GPA, which is why he had to be taken out of the running for the Wooden Award. Syracuse also spent more than any other school on their basketball program this year (per USA Today), and I doubt that included Carmello's salary.

Pistons have memphis 1st pick this year unless it is #1 for them. So I expect Anthony to be coming to Motown..

I think it's funny that he implied to everyone at Syracuse that he'd be around for a while and jetted on them. Oh well, hopefully Memphis gets the 2nd pick so Detroit can fill a gap.

I looked around and could not find the USA today article that discussed how Cuse spent more than any other college (I read it in print on April 2nd in an airport). It was on the front of the sports section in one of their graphs. Marquette spent the least out of top 10 teams, and Cuse the most out of any team.

I am still looking for the article about Mello being taken off the Wooden finalist for the GPA, but here are some that announce the All American Wooden team (which he is not on, but lesser players are). I know Bogans and Mello were two players that had to be taken off due to GPA. A 2.0 is a requirement for the Wooden Award.

Wooden AA

Here is who won it and the other finalists (Anthony not one):

No Anthony

Here is a story that talks about having to have a 2.0:

2.0 needed

I wish I could find the article that discussed some of these players not being allowed to be finalists, but can't. You must admit that he should be a finalist and the only reason is the GPA.

Here is an article that takes a shot at Cuse for graduating ZERO black athletes over the last ten years. That program is truly a sham!
