Hockey-My Ugly Incident

I started playing hockey this summer after being away from the game for years. Used to be a goalie as a kid, playing D right now.

Anyway, last night I got into a situation, not even sure how it started. The long and short of it is this guy punched me in the face about 4-6 times and the next thing I knew I had cracked my stick over his head. I didnt even know i had done it until after. I just snapped, totally lost it. I'm not a violent person, but will stand up for myself or a team mate. I keep playing it over in my mind, I think maybe it's because he was wearing a full cage, there was no sense puching him, wasted effort. I do not wear a cage or visor so I took his punches full on. Maybe it's just inexperience?

Any players out there ever lost it with out even realizing until it's over? What the f$%k makes a person do this? I'm surprised at myself. Looks like I'm out for 5 games unless I can appeal.

I think that happens to most hockey players, I bet that most of the fights occur because of all the adrenaline pumping.

Glad to see you fight back though, I love watching fights on TV in all kinds of sports. :D.

Something similar happened to me when I was about 17, a guy took a swing at me and then kept swinging, eventually I cross-checked him in the chest and knocked him over - it was roller hockey so his balance wasn't that great - and he hit his head on the ground. His helmet cracked but he was OK. It was scary for me once the adrenaline wore off, realizing what I did.

Hockey totally sends someone over the edge sometimes. I am a VERY mellow guy, never got into fights, etc. when I was a kid. But when I put on the hockey gear, I became very different. One time I was in the penalty box and grabbed an opponent who skated by and cross-checked him. Then, in my last high school game, I rocked this one guy with a flying check from behind. As I skated off the ice with my game misconduct, I proceeded to flip off the opposing teams fans and try to pick fights with their parents.

When I look back, it was stupid. But the adrenaline does get pumping big time, and it is blinding.

Does anybody lose it while watching the NHL? Like a goon taking out the star player on a cheap hit?
