NFL preseason injuries

Jets QB, Chad Pennington, just broke his hand and will be out for an extended period of time. This really sucks. It seems like there have been a lot of major injuries in the NFL this preseason, seems like a waste since the games don't even count. I think mentally, you leave yourself more susceptible to injuries when you are not playing full speed. Any thoughts?

Pfft, Atlanta will be fine. They improved their offense drasticly by getting a receiver, now they have a pure passing QB, who will probably take advantage more of Dunn who can also run pretty damn good.

Normally I don't like seeing guys get hurt, but I don't really mind seeing Pennington get hurt. It'll be nice to see Testaverde end his career with probably a full season after losing his starting job mostly due to injury.

And Cetacean, guys are playing full speed, especially guys like Vick and Peerless. They need to get a feel for each other, and they only get that by playing in games, like preseason games. You can't get that in practice.

I don't think there have been a lot of preseason injuries. Vick's injury has been over blown by the media. He will probably end up missing only 4 games or so. How many games does the average NFL player miss?

Pennington's injury is more severe and I expect it to take much longer to heal. Also I have less faith in Testaverde than I do in Johnson. Although, I think Atlanta will suffer without Vick. You just can't compare the talent of Vick to Johnson - Vick probably even has the better arm of the two.

You don't have faith in Vinny?!? He almost took the Jets to the Super Bowl, Johnson's only made four starts and lost three!

That's right - no faith in Vinny. He had a great year in 1998, and hasn't done anything since. I think he was injured in 99, and was at best an average QB from 2000-2002. Simply put, he's done.

Well, time will tell. This is Vinny's last chance to prove that he has got what it takes. I don't have much faith in him either, but I would be very psyched to see him rise to the occasion.

Darn...just when they were about to rename Giants Stadium to the Vinnie Testeverde's Career Memorial Colosium.

The Falcons'll be just fine. Six weeks - three preseason weeks = three regular season weeks, and therefore games. Even if they are 0-3, just getting Vick back would give them a spark.

The Pennington injury is a blow to the Jets, but things could be worse. He should be gone 6-8 weeks according to the NY papers, so he will miss maybe the first third of the season. The injury is to his non-throwing hand, so he could potentially come back quicker with a cast or something. Best case: Vinny starts the first 3 or 4 games and hopefully can win a couple, then Chad comes back.

If Vinny is winning, watch for the Jets to keep Chad out until Vinny starts losing and they need Chad desparately.

Last thing they want is to cause a career ending injury of their QB of the future.

I wouldn't start ANY regular-season starters in a pre-season game.

The regular season guys say themselves that the NEED the preseason to get back up to speed.

It's funny, people that haven't ever played in the NFL criticize the preseason left and right, while people in the NFL are all for it. Maybe a little shorter preseason, but they feel they need it.

yeah i'm worried about preseason injuries too

i don't know if the preseason is too long or anything like that, but it's sad that it has to happen before real meaningful games towards the superbowl happen

especially with guys like pennington or VICK, who lead teams.

when they get hurt in the preseason it really hurts the teams' chance of going to the playoffs

Everybody should remember that it's not just QB's who get hurt. The Rams lost Safety Kim Herring Saturday (after that pansy Sehorn is already hurt) and the Bills lost an offensive lineman. The Niners lost a tight end. The Packers lost at least one offensive lineman.Just go down the list of teams and you will find that they all have at least a couple of guys who get hurt in the preseason. Football is a rough game, people get hurt. I think most people have a problem with players getting hurt in games that mean nothing, and then these players are hurt for when the games DO matter. Also, I think that many of the veteran players can get themselves ready for the season just fine. Not everyone in the league is in favor of a long preseason. Obviously, players need contact, but is it really necessary to have 4 preseason games where players can get hurt in freak accidents or get taken out on dirty plays? If you get hurt in a game that helps your team get to the playoffs, that is one thing, but in a game that counts for nothing? What a waste.

I think they could reduce the preseason to two games and accomplish what it is meant to do. Most teams only play their starters for a quarter or two anyway.

Gray, the Packers didn't lose just an offensive lineman, they lost Gilbert Brown and the rest of their run defense.

There's another reason why there are 5 games though guys, and it's the same reason starters are taken out. "Ok, that's enough, don't want you getting hurt. Lets see what this young guy has."
