They got the size they needed for nothing.
I feel sorry for the Warriors, fans they finally had a half-way decent team, and now they have Van Exel.

At first I thought it was a bad trade too, but looking over Antawn Jamison's stats, he's bigger than I thought at 6'9" 223lbs. It's true, the Mavs need more size. As much as I loved watching Van Excel play, he was not consistent. There were times when he came in and dropped 40 points and many other times when he would go cold. I don't think coach Nellie liked that too much. Hopefully Jamison will help Dallas out. We'll see.

Sounds like a good trade for the Mavs to me.
Jamison will give them more size... I mean... they've got Bradley

Yeah Mavs definitely got the best outta this one (IMO)
Van E was great in the playoffs but his regular season wasn't that great and the Mavs still managed to dominate most of their opponents. I reckon Fortson is a real darkhorse in this deal. If he can recappture some of the form he had a few years ago when he was putting up about 12pts and 12boards then he will help the Mavs immensly. Jamison makes their starters that much tougher too. You've got to feel sorry for Warriors fans. They finally have a season where they show some potential and then when the offseason comes around, they lose their two best players. Hopefully NVE can be a good leader for them but I suspect they will see another decline this season.

The Warriors have the most retarded front-office in the NBA. If they think Dunleavy will amount to anything in Jamison's place, they are sadly mistaken. Jamison loved Golden State and improved every year he was there. At least he won't be going down with the sinking ship out in Golden State anymore.

It was the Spurs who actually signed Horry. He'll be a fairly good addition to their team if he can come back from his terrible shooting form in the finals last year.
Fortson definitely wont be playing starters minutes but I can see him being first man off the bench if he gets some form back. He definitely has more potential than Najera (sp?) Bah it's all just speculation. Either way I like it when they shake the teams up because it keeps the league fresh.

And so the Warrior's brain trust essentially trades Vince Carter for Nick Van Exel...sigh.
From the Warriors' point of view, this was a strict salary dump. No other reason for it; they're crippled under the cap, and want to free up some money to go after free agents in a year or two. |

I really would hate to be a die-hard Warriors fan.
Their latest move has them trading Bob Sura for Cliff Robinson and Pepe Sanchez. So there goes the whole Salary Cap motivation. Sura was in the last year of his contract whereas Uncle Cliff has about 2 years left and is probably a bit overpaid for his age/ability. I can see Cliff starting at SF over Dunleavy unless Dunleavy has gotten a lot better this offseason. It makes the Warriors better this season but I can't see NVE and Cliff being too happy if they're not in the playoffs. Pistons on the other hand needed to clear one of their frontcourt players (after signing campbell) and they got a backup defensive SG just as they require. Sura is overpriced but he is in the last year of his contract so they can hopefully resign him for less next year. Good move by them. Not really a big trade but will still have an effect on both teams.

Warriors fans just got reamed and now Dallas is top-heavy. Van Exel was their 6th man... their clutch scorer... they guy that took all the important shots. Now they have a big skill gap in the 1 & 2 position.

NVE was huge in the playoffs last year but Cuban is obviously banking on the fact that one of Dirk/Nash/Finley/Jamison can come out of their shell in June.

Virtually official now...
Mavs sign Travis Best to a 1 year contract He's definitely no NVE but again, a guy who played well below his potential last year (injuries) and should be a very reliable backup.

"So there goes the whole Salary Cap motivation."
Nah. They've decided that the 2004 offseason is not going to be their time to make a splash, and they're going for 2005. It's actually not a bad rebuilding concept; with all of the sunk costs they've got now, the Warriors have the choice of A) jettisoning EVERYTHING, and starting with very few bad contracts or B) trying to tread water by giving max contracts out and not having the financial flexibility to actually get the players who will get them to the playoffs. Although either way, as Halx said, the fans get screwed. |

This is bad. Our offense is ruined. True, Dirk does all the heavy scoring, Nash with the important 3's (though he used to be better) and Finley with the other 3's. I love the 3-point shot. Van Excel made me love it even more. It is true since his draft the team was more centered around him. But now that he's gone I hope to see more action out of Nash and DEFINENTLY Finley. God damn it the man had game. Then he had to go get an injury. I hope their back in shape. Because in their first game their going the against the Lakers.

Nash can definitely score. I remember some report saying that Coach Nelly told Nash that he has to step-it-up more. I think Nash LIKES to assist more than score, but with Van Excel gone, Nash needs to be able to take it to the hole. If not, then their opponents could drop back and just guard Nowviski or Finley. Personally, I think Finley isn't good or dependable. Maybe it was that he sucked the games I saw him play. But I know he's an important part of the Mavs. Man, I LIKED Van Excel. He was cool to watch, and he was never afraid to score.

I think you guys will be pleasently suprised with Jamison. Van Exel's regular season stats from last year....
YEAR TEAM G GS MPG FG% 3P% FT% OFF DEF RPG APG SPG BPG TO PF PPG 02-03 DAL 73 1 27.8 .412 .378 .764 .50 2.40 2.80 4.3 .58 .05 1.68 1.20 12.5 He only put up 12.5ppg. Basically didn't do a whole heap for most of the season. He did step up in a HUGE way in the playoffs but I think it's worth taking the gamble that either one of Nowitzki, Nash, Finley, Jamison can do that next year. Actually to beat any of the real good teams (LA/SAC/SA/MIN) they are all going to need to play at the top of their games.

7 rebounds a game is not bad at all for a small forward esp. for one who is capable of putting up 30 or even 40 points in a game.
who are you going to double team on the mavs? it will be a defensive nightmare for every team.
