Official Sports Trivia Thread:

ok guys, this is for all you sports trivia geniuses out there!
I'll start off, then whoever answers has to post their own question. It can be about any sport and the era doesn't matter.

Q: Bobby Thomson hit what has come to be known as the "Shot heard 'round the world" to win the pennant for the Giants in 1951. My question is, Who was on deck?

:D

BigGov 08-15-2003 07:34 PM

Easy. Willie Mays.

Hrm...What should I ask...Meh, I'll do an easy one.

Who holds the record for the most career losses in MLB?

grayman 08-15-2003 07:50 PM

Cy Young.
Who holds the record for rushing yards by a quarterback in the Super Bowl?

BigGov 08-15-2003 08:14 PM

I don't know for sure, so I'll guess Steve Young in SB 29

grayman 08-15-2003 08:40 PM

nope

BigGov 08-15-2003 08:50 PM

Hmm...Nice way to kill a topic, lol

Tarkington in SB 4?

grayman 08-15-2003 09:36 PM

Sorry, not trying to be a jerk. It was McNair in 34.

BigGov 08-15-2003 09:37 PM

Bah!

Ask an easier one.

grayman 08-15-2003 09:42 PM

Who is the only MLB player to hit 2 grand slams in the same inning?

BigGov 08-15-2003 09:55 PM

Fernando Tatis?

grayman 08-15-2003 10:06 PM

That's correct. Your turn.

BigGov 08-15-2003 10:27 PM

I'll go with another easy one.

Who scored the first ever touchdown in a Super Bowl and for what team?

h2g2Fan 08-15-2003 10:30 PM

jerry rice. superbowl 32

grayman 08-15-2003 10:36 PM

huh?
Isn't it Max McGee for the Packers? On a pass thrown by Bart Starr.
Ok, now I'll give someone else a chance.

BigGov 08-16-2003 01:38 AM

Man, questions like these are always too hard or too easy.

Funny Quote I found: 'There's a deep fly ball...Winfield goes back...back...his head hits the wall...and it rolls off...and it's rolling all the way back to second base. This is a terrible thing for the Padres'! - Jerry Coleman

Ok, here's a harder one.

Which player stole home 50 times in their career?

gov135 08-16-2003 07:06 AM

You won't sneak many Ty Cobb questions past me, Jimmy.

Sidebar: The great Ernie Harwell recently joined the Wednesday nite baseball guys for the whole game, during which he told many stories. When asked about Cobb, he said that Cobb always treated him well. And he said he had a story - In the late fourties (well after Cobb was done playing), Harwell, Cobb, and the man that was Cobb's GM were at Augusta for the Master's. The GM spoke about how he received glowing telegrams detailing Cobb's progress at the AAA level after almost every game. This was when Cobb fessed up, he was the one that sent the telegrams. The GM had never had any idea.

Anyhow, my question I'll post in a minute. I need to check it.

From 1990 to 1997 either Barry Sanders or Emmitt Smith lead the league in rushing. Who lead the league in rushing in 1989, before this remarkable streak began?

BigGov 08-16-2003 07:49 AM

Jerome Bettis?

gov135 08-16-2003 08:01 AM

No, sorry. Nice guess, but not Jerome.

BigGov 08-16-2003 08:50 AM

One last guess, Marcus Allen.

Kurant 08-16-2003 12:05 PM

I forgot his name.

This is what makes it a good trivia question. He was a heck of a back for a couple of seasons. Congrats on the correct answer.

dtheriault 08-17-2003 06:05 AM

RBI King: Hank Aaron- not only yanked home runs, but drove in more runs than anyone.

Average per game: Pistol Pete for LSU i think he averaged around 44 per game (damn) i wish i was old enough to have seen him play. i've only seen short video clips.

who's next?

BigGov 08-18-2003 10:17 PM

Who holds the record for the lowest ERA in a single season among active players?

BigGov 08-20-2003 09:03 PM

Is there a limit? Because I'm sure someone has worked almost nothing in one season and has an ERA of 0.00.

djtestudo 08-20-2003 09:15 PM

Pedro Martinez?

BigGov 08-20-2003 09:33 PM

Oh, forgot to guess.

I'll to with Greg Maddox, probably early to mid-90's.

you are CORRECT sir!! it was Greg Maddux in 1994 w/ an ERA of 1.56

MikeyChalupa 08-21-2003 03:55 AM

To qualify for an ERA title, you must have pitched at least one inning for every game your team played. In other words, at the end of a full season, you must have at least 162 innings pitched.

-Mikey

BigGov 08-21-2003 09:20 AM

Ahh, thanks Mikey.

Bah, I'll go with another easy one.
