Best secondary in the NFL

My vote is for the Patriots, they have 3 pro bowlers in Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy and Rodney Harrison. They also have 2 proven veterans in Otis Smith and Tyrone Poole and 2 new cornerbacks in the draft.

Spartak 07-12-2003 03:48 PM

Bucs, easily.

Just watch Superbowl XXXVII again ;)

BigGov 07-12-2003 07:16 PM

Eagles. Vincent and Taylor are shut down corners. Dawkins puts legitimate fear into people that come across the middle. Their younger players are coming along nicely too.

The_Dude 07-12-2003 07:41 PM

i like dallas, or what they're gonna be next year.

they got roy williams and terrance newman.

i think they're gonna make a lot of kewl plays next yr

spectre 07-12-2003 08:59 PM

Eagles, Bucs, and Patriots all have great secondaries. All three have a lot of support from their D-line putting enough pressure on the QB though. I think the Eagles may see a slight slip even in secondary with the loss of Hugh Douglass and the Pats will see a major increase in secondary production with the addition of Rosie Colvin. Remember, D-backs can only do so much if the line doesn't get any pressure on the quarterback and the D-line can only do so much if the secondary doesn't keep the receivers covered.

clockworkgreen 07-12-2003 10:25 PM

Iggles. Dawk is the man.

crow_daw 07-13-2003 12:37 AM

NOT my Titans, thats for damn sure. But they'll still be the bomb.

As much as I hate them, the Eagles probably get this one.

Soggybagel 07-13-2003 10:24 AM

Gotta say the Bucs.

clockworkgreen 07-13-2003 12:35 PM

Thing is, it's good to have a good secondary again in Philly. Like back in the day with Eric Allen, Andre "Dirty" Watters, Wes Hopkins...

Note: Not Izel Jenkins. Holy Lord. He was nicknamed Toast, and for good reason.

Ok really now. No one asked who your favorite team was. They asked who was the best secondary. There is no way that even the players on Dallas would say they are the best secondary.

So really - do you think they are the best secondary going now? I would say that they may not even be in the top ten in the NFL.

sportsrule101 07-15-2003 12:52 PM

both the bucs, and eagles have great lines to help the secondary look good. watch out for the bills secondary, they had a major improvement in the d-line, and have up and coming stars in the cornor positions

BigGov 07-15-2003 09:41 PM

The Eagles had massive injuries though with Hollis Thomas (breaking his foot on the damn turf, "nooo, we're too good for astroturf, lets switch to nexturf") and Corey Simon and such. Not to mention the Linebacker problems. So in order to counteract that, the Eagles have to leave the corners alone and blitz their safety's like crazy, where Dawkins more often than not comes up with a play.

That defines the best secondary.

The Bucs have an all-star linemen and linebackers. Sub in average corners and safeties and the Bucs still do fine.

bigoldalphamale 07-16-2003 04:51 AM

as much as i hate to admit it. the skins have a pretty bomb secondary. champ and smoot on the corners are tough and with arrington allowed to float around the middle of the field and act like a safety...there arent going to be many teams passing on the skins this year.

Blu2e354 07-16-2003 05:02 PM

best secondary belongs to the dolphins

It's stewart time

hell no, hell no.

no way in hell that dallas is my favorite team.

Mondak 07-17-2003 08:43 PM

So that must mean you really think they have a good secondary then?

Weird. Like I said - I think there are at least ten above it - maybe more.

Lestat 07-18-2003 11:57 PM

Raiders - Woodson and Buchanon. You'll see....

Jadey 07-19-2003 07:22 AM

What about the Dolphins? Especially after singing Sammy Knight. They're even better now. They've got their share of Pro Bowlers also. Patrick Surtain, Sammy Knight, Sam Madison, Terrel Buckley is back, Brock Marion, Arturo Freeman, Shawn Wooden.

They've got speed, size, and depth.

well, i like those 2 guys.

roy williams and terrance newman. i seen what they can do in college and they should be able to transfer it to the nfl.

Mondak 07-19-2003 10:51 AM

Corners usually get burnt for at least a year when they get to the NFL if not more. Reason? The WRs are so much faster in the NFL and the routers are more complex. Before they could close any gap with just speed. Now they have to excersise that other muscle they have: the brain. That is right. The reaon that Darrell Green was one of the greatest CBs of all time is not only that he was insanly fast - it was that he was SMART.

The_Dude 07-19-2003 10:53 AM

well, roy williams did make an impact in his first season. maybe that's cuz he was with such a sorry team, but he stood out.

Mondak 07-19-2003 07:51 PM

I guess your newspapers don't have that much to talk about so they just make stuff up. Now I understand.

You are kidding right?

Williams, newman, woodson, search williams on tackles see which saftey comes close. He was 17th in the NFL in tackles, from a FS spot no less.

Mondak 07-21-2003 02:28 PM

I got a few off the top of my head that are better without me thinking too hard about it.

Redskins

Pats

Eagles

Dolphins

Bucs

Then I would start to think about some others if I had to.

Green Bay and Carolina actually come to mind and I'll even throw in St Louis while I am at it. That is before I even get deep at all.

Brian Fellows 07-22-2003 11:55 PM

It isn't the Chiefs their whole defense sucks, its how the best offensive team in the league last year finished at 8-8.

geodaro 07-23-2003 09:11 AM

Obviously the BUCS have the best secondary in the league! Anybody who thinks otherwise can kiss their collective Super Bowl rings! (of course I am from central Florida and have watched the BUCS love season after season for over 26 years). REDEMPTION!

geodaro 07-23-2003 09:13 AM

Sorry, I meant "LOSE" season after season....not "LOVE". I'm having speling problms todey!

scypher 07-23-2003 10:20 AM

Many of you are forgetting about Miami. Being a Jets fan, I'm scared this season. They have Marion, Freeman, Knight, and many more I can't remember... They are going to be a raucus defense this year...

Buk 07-23-2003 11:31 AM

Some great teams have been mentioned, one team that is missing though is the Washington Redskins, with Champ Bailey manning the island you can't do much wrong.

salsa2 07-23-2003 02:00 PM

dont underestimate the dallas secondary. In addition to Williams and Newman (and Woodson) they also have Pete Hunter and Derek Ross. Two young guys with huge upsides. This will be at top 5 defense next year

SAM821 07-23-2003 05:47 PM

Miami has the best secondary this year, along with the depth, and most like the best defense

SysteMatiC 07-24-2003 02:55 PM

I would have to say either the eagles or pats.

FunHater 07-27-2003 01:02 AM

Really though, it is tough for me to say who the best is, there are a number of teams with a very good secondary.

Jesus Malverde 07-27-2003 10:36 PM

Dallas does have a very good secondary. They will have to prove themselves, AGAIN, this year. It's going to be very hard to pass on them, Woodson and Williams are very smart and very good tacklers, and Terence Newman is very good, I compare him to Champ Bailey. Miami has the best cornerback in Sam Madison, but not the best overall secondary.

Caser 07-28-2003 08:47 AM

i had to work during the superbowl....that had to hurt more then a .22 slug to the chest

ndulacd 07-28-2003 04:19 PM

Its hard to say for sure since we only have last year to go on. Also, some teams secondary's look better than they are simply b/c the rest of the defense makes them look better. Others look worse than they are b/c they are trying to compensate for the rest of the defense. I agree that Dallas has an interesting secondary and could be one of the best. I also agree with the Bucs and Patriots. The Redskins, Eagles and Dolphins will have very good ones as well, but I think part of that is due to the rest of the defense helping them out. But that is what makes defenses great. Its the entire unit working together and helping each other out.

Don't over look the Ravens' secondary this year. They've still got Chris McAlister and Ed Reed back there. With an improved line and the always dangerious Ray Lewis, they could be one of the top defenses in the NFL again. They have some young guys in the secondary that may really surprise people this year. They may not be the best yet, but keep an eye on them.

dy156 07-29-2003 12:34 PM

Don't mean to beat this Dallas thing to death, but they have potential to be great, and they're going to have to shine this year, because the D line is not so great, and the linebackers, while likeable guys and fan favorites, are not probowl caliber. I think Woodson's leadership and undeniable toughness will help the young unproven potential stars immensely.
All that having been said, best would probably be Tampa Bay -interceptions, tackles, coverage- they can all do it all, and are one of the often overlooked reasons TB won it all.

iceman2032 07-29-2003 01:07 PM

Best Secondary of all time: 94 49ers

Explosive 07-29-2003 05:46 PM

'Phins have the deepest secondary, and the best. Though the Eagles and Raiders are up there.
