I scored 110 yesterday!
If I had been playing cricket that would have been fucking fantastic, as I have only got above 50 once in senior cricket, and the only time Ive got three figures was as a "ringer" in an under 14's games when I was 16 (and 14 stone).
But I was playing golf. Shit.

That's golf and I've come to the conclusion that *anyone* can have a crappy day at golf. I've hit 110 this year (so I feel your pain), but I've also hit 93 (which is pretty good for me).

i dont keep count with my golf games.
thats because id rather be in the driving range smashing 'em up. the finesse in getting the ball to the hole evades me.

You see, finesse is all I have. If I hit much more than a seven iron I hook the ball to left every time, but my bunker shots were beautiful (I mean, not Tiger Woods style, but every bunker I escaped and got within say 10 feet of the hole)... but it was my putting that really let me down. Longest putt I sunk was probably a three/four footer.
People I know who are really into golf say that you have to play twice a week to be any good - and I dont have that committment even in summer, let alone when the weather is crap.

I really should learn to play golf sometime. I've never been!

Are you lining yourself up with the ball properly?
If right handed put the ball into the drivers head and back the club up about an inch (2.5cm). Put your left foot even with the ball, big toe should be right at the ball, then back up until you feel comfortable, add the right hand and swing. Try that. Now if you slice or hook after that, open your left foot until the hook/slice starts to die. But whatever you do keep that ball in the center of the driver and adjust yourself not the club. Now for long irons, cradle the ball where the club and shaft meet. Nestle it in there. Again, adjust you not the club. The longer the iron the more the big toe is even with the ball. That's how it was explained to me, I played around with that stance and adjusted myself never the club once I set it down and my score got better almost immediately, it really took out my slice. I hope this helps.

I think I pull the ball when I try to overcook it. If Im hitting within like 120 yards I hit it pretty straight. If Im aiming any further I think I try and swing too hard and the club gets ahead of me... thats just my thinking, but my technique is horrible probably cos Ive never had any instruction and just play as it comes natural and I think golf is too technical a game for that.
The funny thing was, I played awful the whole way, and the last hole was a par 3 about 170 yards over water. Now, this girl Ive been quite good mates with recently was outside of the clubhouse with her mate watching as I came up the 18th... so I hit an ok-ish iron off the tee and carry the water and leave myself about 15 yards short of the green (that being one of the top 5 tee shots Id played all day)... walk up and chip it to a couple of feet and then roll in the putt... she was well impressed and said she didnt realise how good I was: but I told her I'd dropped a couple of shots on the way round and finished "a few" over par. I hope I never end up in a situation where she gets to see me play golf again and realises Im actually shit!

It does take a bit of practice, but i play a tourney every 2 weeks and usually hit a bucket of balls a week and have one putting session. I carry a 9 handicap, but to get any better it would take 3 rounds a week plus some added practice sessions. If you want to get a to your potential it does take a big commitment. Enjoy the game for what it is... a great opportunity for fellowship in the great out of doors. much less than half the folks that play golf regularly can routinely break 100. Putting and chipping practice will lower scores faster than any other effort and it doesn't take a ton of time or money. Enjoy! It is a addictive game!
